We booked to stay at the Ohana Waikiki West through our travel agent as part of our honeymoon package. I had checked out some hotels prior to booking but had not come across this one. We thought we would give it a try as it looked nice in the brochure.
However when I got back home and looked it up on the internet I was not looking forward to our stay at all. There were horrer stories about the leanliness of the hotel, the rowdyness of the hotel and the nightmare lift situation.
We arrived late at night and went straight to check in, where we found there had been a mistake with the booking and the room was booked only for my (new) husband. I was very disappointed but in fairness to the staff on reception they were most apologetic and sorted out another room for us, located on the first floor - the smoking floor. as nonsmokers we were a little concerned but in need of a bed for the night so decided to sort it in the morning.
When we got to the room - experiencing no problems with the lift, we were pleasantly surprised. There was no smoke odour in the room and it was tastefully decorated in hawaiin greens and creams.
The room had a TV, fridge, coffe percolater, ironing board, iron & hairdryer. It wasn't as big as i expected but it was very comfortable and we soon crashed out.
The hotel also offers a laundry room, swimming pool with poolside bar and a small shop located in the lobby - though things are cheaper in the ABC store across the road.
The Ohana West is not a bed and breakfast or half board hotel so we were left to find our own food. This I am now grateful for I was found some wonderful restaurants all within walking distance of our hotel. Chilies being located right under the hotel.
I would definitely recommend Cheeseburger Paradise to go for food as I had the best shrimp there (they don't just do burgers). Dennys across the road offers a wide selection of breakfasts, but a must has to be Dukes for their buffet breakfast. Again a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
We booked a number of trips whilst on honeymoon and all of our trips picked us up and dropped us off at the side of the hotel. Just take your booking receipt with you and off you go.
Shops are located just outside the hotel too, including a cheap supermarket selling everything on the opposite corner to our hotel. Be warned you will never be far from a ABC store and can pick up essentials ther quite cheaply.
The main shops are within walking distance, with The International Market place right opposite the hotel. Tings are quite cheap here but can be found cheaper at the Alo Moana shopping centre - a short trolley ride away.
Basically this hotel provided us with a central location to everything we needed and was not as bad as we were thinking it might be. The lifts can get busy around peak times as there are only three lifts to service the whole hotel. You can always use the stairs depnding on what floor your on. We didn't get to try out the swimming pool as Waikiki
beach was just two blocks away but the kids seemed to love it. We were not disturbed by loud and wild parties as other reviews had said - perhaps we were just lucky.
I would recommend this hotel if your on a bit of a budget and just looking for somewhere to base yourself. If your used to the finer things then try the
Hilton Village resort!
