O'zapft is!

Advantages: too many to mention here!
Disadvantages: often overcrowded, but if you know how to escape it it's not that bad

...200 carnie businesses at the Oktoberfest, more than 80 of them fun rides. I will, however, only describe some of them as of course I couldn't give them all a try.

Modern rides:

_Top Spin Fresh_
My favourite ride - it consists of a passenger platform that is suspended between two arms which are turned by motors so that the platform will rotate. If you don't want to get completely wet you should try to get a seat ...
...different swing carousels on the Oktoberfest, the best known one probably the "Wellenflug". The rides last between 3 and 5 minutes and cost around 3 € (ca. £ 2.45) - something I loved as a child and still enjoy!

_Big Wheel_
Of course with its height of only 50m the Big Wheel that we have on the Oktoberfest cannot keep up with the world's other big wheels like the Beijing Great Wheel or the London Eye - but it nevertheless ... more

Advantages: Beer, Food, Fun Fairs, Beer
Disadvantages: Very very Crowded, Hard to get a seat

I'd always quite fancied a trip to Munich during September to experience the event known around the world as Oktoberfest. I'd pretty much ruled it out for this year what with moving house and was aiming to go next year till my Dad suggested I go with them this year. So on the 15th September we set off for Munich to visit the most famous and probably biggest beer festival in the world. From the moment you get on the plane you know it's going to be ...
...groups of Australians, Americans and English all heading over for the weekend. So how did Oktoberfest start? Well it originated back in 1810 as a celebration of the Wedding between Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Theresa of Saxony-Hildburghausen. After the wedding the Royal couple invited all the people of Munich to celebrate their wedding with them. Over the years the festival got bigger and bigger as the Munich breweries carried on the tradition. ...

Oktoberfest

Advantages: Beer, beer, beer
Disadvantages: Very crowded, not cheap

...plan to go to the Oktoberfest, and come up with all sorts of excuses and reasons for not heading down to Munich – the train journey, the cost, the fact that it is almost impossible to get a seat inside a tent after 11am. And then I get a phone call from a couple of mates in England who tell me that they are booking a cheap flight to Frankfurt, and that I really ought to get cracking and organise a trip to the Oktoberfest. Yes, I really am that ...
...have a presence at the Oktoberfest, and they all push the boat out more and more each year, designing bigger and better tents to cram in as many revellers as possible. The obvious ones to go for are Löwenbräu and Hofbräu, as these are (I think) the two biggest tents, but whatever you do, make sure to get there early. And I do mean early – the doors open at 10am, and if you want to get a seat inside a tent then you absolutely have to be in place ...

Oktoberfest - a guide

Advantages: Biggest beer event in the world, great social event, amazing, just go there
Disadvantages: getting a table thurs-sun is hard, prices of everything go up at this time of the year, too many people

Taking place in the second half of September and early Oktober, the Oktoberfest is world famous for thousands upon thousands of people getting legless in huge beer tents. The "fest" has been going on for well over 150 years and lasts for 2 and a half weeks, whereupon about 5 million litres of bier are drunk and it ain't half potent stuff! My trip there was in September 99 and is an experience that I'll never forget. We arrived on the last Thursday ...
...was buzzing even if the weather wasn't the best. After trying and failing to get served at 2 tents, we ended up in the Lowenbrau tent, whereupon we managed to sit with a load of Germans who'd reserved a table and from then on getting served was no problem. Important Point 1: You have to order beer from a table, the frauleins won't serve you if you are stood in an aisle, and buying beer from the bar is strictly verboten. So, the games commenced, ...

A brief review of the Wiesn

Advantages: Good Beer, Socializing
Disadvantages: Overcrowded on weekends

Hi Ciao Community, today I want to write a short essay about my 'recent' (2007) experience on the Oktoberfest ("Wiesn") in Munich, Germany. Unfortunately, I have forgotten a lot of that day since the beer they serve is fairly strong:-) But here's my view on the following key points: - Access to tents - Prices - Attractions 1) Access to tents Actually, and especially on a Saturday when I tried my luck, it is virtually impossible to enter a ...
...a place in one of the biergarten around the big tents. Solution: Make a reservation in advance (You must commit to 8persons, consuming 16 beers, and 8 grilled chickens, ~240EUR) 2) Prices In my opinion beer is not that much overpriced compared to the prices you pay in Munich in general (around 7-8 EUR for 1 liter). Food is quite expensive as far as i remember;-) 3) Attractions There's much overpriced new stuff - however, in my opinion it is best ...

Munich-Museums and Oktoberfest

Advantages: "We Bavarians are superiour"
Disadvantages: none

Well, maybe this is the only opinion about munich written by a bavarian.I'm born in Munich and I'm really happy about it. Munich is the perfect connection between culure and, well, drinking, party and lifestyle. So on the one hand side you can visit art exhibitions at the different museums in munich which belong to the most important in Europe. Or go to theatre or cinema etc. But on the other hand side there's this face of munich the most people know: Oktoberfest, big beer mugs, tabledance. And it's another great and funny part of munich: There's this kind of "bavarian way of life" that makes bavarians think as bavarians, not as Germans. I you'd ask a (real) Bavarian, where he's from, he'd answer "Bavaria", not "Germany". They enjoy to realize their roots as autonome country, with their own Culture, their "own" religions (most ...

Review of Munich (Germany)

Prost!

Advantages: Great value, brilliant beer
Disadvantages:

Having been to the Oktoberfest, it is true that nowhere can rival the beerhalls of Munich. Not only do the tent on the Theresienwiese never run dry of beer, but teh beer cellars sell some excellent beers at not very out of the way prices. A Maß - 1 litre will set you back about 11DM (GBP 3.75) and the beer is infinitely superior to anything you get on draught in Britain, bar in a few very specialist bars. The atmosphere is friendly, although there are a few exceptions. Waiters and waitresses may come across as a bit unfriendly, but they are so used to seeing drunks and so on that it is understandable. For travel connections there are trains to all over mainland Europe from the Hauptbahnhof, and the airport is very well connected by public transport links to the city, which is just as well, as it is tucked away to the North. The tube is ...

A Spot On The Lake

Advantages: Within easy reach of Munich Centre, Friendly welcoming staff
Disadvantages: No credit card facilities

Back at the start of the year I decided, along with my parents, that a trip to the opening weekend of Oktoberfest in Munich was a great idea for a holiday this year. The only problem seemed to be the cost of a hotel in Munich itself for that weekend. The majority of places were booked up and those that weren't wanted anywhere from £100 + per person per night. It was for this reason that we ended up staying in Starnberg, about half an hour to the south of central Munich. When my dad told me about it, it seemed a little excessive, we would spend half an hour each way on a train. The more I thought about it though, the more the Hotel Bayerischer Hof seemed to be quite appealing. It's located on the edge of lake Starnberg, about half an hour south of Munich towards the Austrian border. If it had been in Britain you could guarantee ...
