The Bahamas are situated in the Atlantic ocean, South Est. of Florida (USA) and stretch across 100,000 square miles for approximately 350 000 inhabitants. They were discovered by Christopher Columbus en 1492. Out of a myriad of islands, approx 700, some minute, only 30 have settlements on them. They were in the past occupied mainly by pirates like the infamous Blackbeard who used these island to intercept ships coming back from South America and going towards Europe with their precious cargo. Rich and famous people like Johnny Depp own some of these island.
Official language is English although more American in tone than English, and the currency is Bahamian dollar (BSD). If you are planning to visit, best option is to take US dollars or travellers; most credit cards are accepted.

I was lucky enough to go to the Bahamas on holiday in April 2008. In our party there were 3 children and 3 adults.
We arrived at the airport to be met by a limousine, we were driven to The Atlantis hotel on Paradise Island?wow what a place. We were able to have a good look round whilst in the Limo, the weather was beautiful and when we arrived at the Hotel, you could see why it was called Paradise!!
The hotel was enormous; it had lots of different sections. There is the Royal Towers, Imperial club, Coral Towers, Beach Towers, The Cove Atlantis, The Reef Atlantis, Harbour side Resort, and Special.
We stayed in the Coral towers. Our room was large with 2 double beds in. It had a full stocked bar, which was checked daily and re-stocked?..beware, very expensive!
There was a large mirrored wardrobe and plenty of drawer space ...
Advantages: Excellent scenery Disadvantages: Had to come home!

The resort has its own private airport if you happen to have your own plane or use a charter service, otherwise fly into New Bight (TBI) airport from Nassau byBahamas Air or Lynx Air, available from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It's an hour's drive from the airport but Hawk's Nest will collect you. Cat Island has a second commercial airport, Arthur's Town, at the northern end, about 4 hours drive away, and you would need to arrange your own transport.
