This beautiful district is my favourite place to visit in Philadelphia and is the 'Old city' where Philadelphia began, which according to my wife (a native of Philadelphia) is a complete transformation from the district she remembers as a child becoming one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the country. Twenty years ago it was the site of small factories and is now the home to galleries, performing arts and well over a hundred Philadelphia's best restaurants. The area is made up of buildings which range from circa American revolution to 19th century architecture It has with a vast collections of cast iron buildings.
With the Art galleries came the restaurants and various other trendy bars and eateries along with the popular Market and Chestnut streets that are the place to be at the weekends and teem with an eclectic mix of people taking in the sights and soaking up the atmosphere. And as an added bonus, because of the historic significance of some of the area your experience will be heightened by the total lack of the obvious fast-food chains.
Apart from the galleries and places to eat and hang out also in the area you will find Independence Hall (where the decleration was drafted and signed) and The Liberty Bell Exhibit. Also you can find Betsy Ross's house; the 18th century home that is open to the public of Betsy Ross the woman who made the First US flag.
Also ask for directions to Elthreth's Alley, a small residential alley where people still live in late 18th century houses and said to be the oldest residential street in the USA.
Spend a day and then another in the old arts district, you'll have a ball.
Advantages: A wonderful parkwith tonns to do Disadvantages: Not in the centre of Philadelphia
Fairmount park is situated a little off the beaten track in Philadelphia, away from centre city and the more popular Oldarts and historical district. (however the Philadelphia museum of Art is just on the edge of the park.
Ok this park is absolutely huge, I was told it is something like 4000 acres and I believe that to be true.
The Schuylkill river runs through the park and there are thousands and thousands of trees and masses of beautiful open space that makes it too easy to forget that you are on the edge of a large city.
It is a perfect location for riverside walks, picnics with the family or some really hard-core hiking. There are miles of cycle paths and bridle tracks where I saw many people riding their horses.
As well as childrens parks and play areas dotted all over the park it is also the home of the Philadelphia zoo ...
Advantages: All the good history set in a beautiful lawn of 45 acres Disadvantages: Large area to cover that needs a full day
The Independence National Historical Park which is part of the OldArtsdistrict and sometimes referred to as centre city is set in around 45 acres and houses most of Philadelphia's important historic sights, such as The Liberty Bell exhibit, and Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were created, (Also one of the scenes in the recent movie 'National Treasure' with Nicholas Cage).
The park also depicts the events and the lives of the population during the years when Philadelphia was the capital city of the United States around 1790 to 1800 (I think). If you have any questions there is always a National Park warder to answer them, and they are friendly and very knowledgable in American history.
A part of the park is the site where Benjamin Franklin lived where there now stands ...
