To be honest there is not really a lot left to see of the original Gaol, as most of it was pulled down to make way for the University.
All that is left is on three story wing, though it is the wing which contained NED KELLY prior to his execution.

Advantages: Good way to pass an afternoon or morning out of the Melbourne sun. Disadvantages: Not really much to see, but still worth it

The most famous exhibt, thanks to BILLY CONNELLY, are the wanking mits, displayed in a case in Cell No 13 on the ground floor.

The most famous exhibt, thanks to BILLY CONNELLY, are the wanking mits, displayed in a case in Cell No 13 on the ground floor.
A guide explains via, a model of the gaol what exactly you can see, and a brief history of the gaol, after that you can wander round visiting each of the cells, all of which are open, though there are over 30, and in my view once you've seen one bare cell you've seen them all.
Story boards in some cells explain the history of transportation & the Australian Penal system, plus the history of the Gaol and the story of Ned Kelly. There is also a chance to walk on the actual scaffold used in Kelly's execution (thankfully now made safe), and to see a replica of Kelly's armour (apparently the original is housed in Melbourne Library)
After, or before entering the Gaol there is a chance to stock up on souveniers of your trip, ranging from tea towels and badges to postcards and books about Australia's most famous outlaw.
Advantages: easy to get around plenty to see and do Disadvantages: not enough time
a free service.
There are many parks and gardens to visit and the one I like the best is Fitzroy gardens, this is where Cook's Cottage is. This is an 18TH century building. This was originally built in Yorkshire, England then transported to Australia in 1933. This garden is ideally placed as it is close to Melbournes CBD. The gardens boundaries are Wellington Parade, Clarendon Street, Albert Street.
The ideal way to see all the other historic attractions as well as Cook's Cottage is to purchase a Melbourne Heritage Pass and this will enable you to visit the OldMelbourneGaol and Como House as well. These passes can be obtained by visiting the Melbourne Visitor's Centre which is located at Federation Square.
There is plenty to see but these are only a handful of attractions to see and what I like about it is it does not cost ...
Advantages: Simply the most attractive city in the world Disadvantages: Could be an advantage but doesn't have that big city buzz
just to stand and gape at the rows and rows of pokies, blackjack, roulette, baccarat and all manner of other games solely designed to remove crisp clean notes from peoples wallets.
- OldMelbourneGaol - At the moment the MelbourneGaol has a special display on dedicated to larrikan highwayman Ned Kelly who was hanged there in 1880. Defintely one to see for the more morbid visitor.
- Pubs - Melbourne differs from Sydney in that the centrally located pubs all have a distinctly English feel to them and whilst relatively rare I can certainly advise the Elephant & Wheelbarrow located on Bourke street which has a range of English bitters... admittedly these are fairly pricey and served far too cold but it made a pleasant change to drink something less gassy than the standard Australian fare. Young and Jacksons is also well worth a visit ...
Advantages: All the food & drink Disadvantages: none that i know of
.
The Immigration Museum - next door to the Crown Casino, this museum chronicles the experiences of many Australian immigrants.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground - for any sport lover this ground is second only to Lords. Home of countless Ashes wins and triumphant Aussie Rules finals. Guided tours are available, but the best way to see it is to get tickets for a game.
Parliament House - The home of Australian Federation, again tours are available but witnessing a parliamentary debate is better.
Some i haven't been to recently or have changed..

Food & Drink...
By far the best thing about Melbourne is the fantastic food and drink available. Because a large majority of Australians are immigrants, there are areas of the city where one cuisine rules.
