Break a Leg!

Advantages: Fantastic theatre and easy to get to.
Disadvantages: Too Many Stairs!

...have been performed at the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham. So I thought I would write a review to give you a view from backstage as well as front of house and watching the performance!

*** A Little Bit Of History ***

When I first performed in The Old Rep I was aware of he fact that it is a very old building, but I had no idea of the history that was behind it until one of my friends there mentioned that there ...
...this.

The Old Rep Theatre was designed and built by a man called Sir Barry Jackson in 1913 and is now a Grade II Listed Building. It only took four months to complete building the theatre and it finally opened on 15th February 1913 with a performance of Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night'

From first opening its doors in February 1913 right up until 1971 The Old Rep was the home to Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company who performed ... more

A somewhat rusty gateway

Advantages: Very central location, the caff!
Disadvantages: Rather tacky feel, not very well signposted

through penny whistle players (some of whom only know - sort of - one tune) to people who have pretty much lost all hope and spend the day sitting listlessly on a filthy blanket outside McDonald's. For the most part, these people are not in any way aggressive, and you certainly won't feel threatened, but you probably will feel guilty. What you do has to be down to your conscience. There is, in fact, another way out of the Pallasades, though you have to know where it is. Next to the aforesaid Vienna Patisserie is a passageway leading to some stairs. Follow these down, and you'll emerge in Station Street, which happens to be where I get my bus home, but is also the home of the Old Rep theatre and the arthouse Electric Cinema. Customer help and advice is almost non-existent - there are no help desks, and you're clearly expected to know your ...

Something a bit different

Advantages: Great productions and special programs not offered else where and designed to involve the community
Disadvantages: Not a very traditional theatre

Having just spent a week?s work experience at the Rep, I feel suddenly inspired to write what of I think of this fantastic place. I now feel I have the knowledge to write a decent opinion giving information to people across the country who may not even have heard of it. The Rep is a contemporary theatre that not only brings us the best new productions and adaptations of the old, but who also give the community the chance to participate and learn more. Needless to say it?s well worth a visit, if you?re after a more unusual theatre experience. Main Stage: The stage in the main auditorium is one of the largest in Britain. Although the whole of it is not always used, it goes a long, long way back and reaches very high up. The seating itself it very unusual too ? instead of stalls, circle and upper circle, it goes up in tiers. It ...

Review of Birmingham Rep/The Door

Birmingham, Don't knock it till you've tried it!

Advantages: Lots of things to do
Disadvantages: Not enough time, unless your lucky enough to live here!

! The exhibits are defiantly hands on and contains the only IMAX cinema in the Midlands. STAR CITY ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE This is a massive building containing restaurants such as Pizza Hut and Nando's, there are 10 restaurants and bars to choose from. There is also the biggest casino in the UK and the largest multiplex cinema in the UK. It also boasts a 22 lane mega bowl, which from my experience is easy to get lanes without even booking. It is located just off the M6 motorway not far from the city centre either! THEATRES From the Alexandra to the Old Rep there are many theatres to choose from in Birmingham, just looking in the city centre booking office at the leaflets you will find something that floats you boat, from shows at the Hippodrome Theatre to concerts and the well known NEC or NIA arena's there is something for everyone.
