Advantages: Great bars and shops Disadvantages: Quite crowded
Having visted the Altstadt on more than one occasion over the last few years (My dad lived in Germany) I have not had a bad experience of it. Situated near the Rhine, it is a glorious array of cafes and shops. Best experience has to be when we went for a delicious meal (sorry, can't remember name of restaurant) then found our way into the bars. Service was excellent, never an empty glass and the atmostphere was electric. Men and women of all ages ... ...comfortable and at ease all night, especially when we moved on to a club and danced the night away to a variety of European music.
More recently we went to a Xmas market near the Alstadt which I must recommend, wrap up warm and weave your way round the wonderfully decorated stalls whilst supping Gluvine (spelling?) A good place to stock up on some Xmas pressies! ... more

Advantages: Big city feel, plenty to see and do Disadvantages: Overuse of concrete when rebuilding the city centre gives it a very grey feel in winter
I lived in Hannover for my year abroad during my German couse at university, and found it a great place to live. Since my time there (96-97) the city has been spruced up a great deal as the EXPO has come to town, but essentially it still offers a surprising amount for the casual traveller to enjoy. There is a large shopping centre, stretching from the Hauptbahnhof, round Kröpcke square and down to the remnants of the oldtown (Hannover was severely affected in the Allied air raids during WW2 but part of the Altstadt was painstakingly rebuilt), and the oldtown in particular offers many a bar and restaurant where you can enjoy good food and drink. The town hall buildings and the Maschsee, a vast artificial lake that freezes solid in winter are well worth a visit, as are the Herrenhäuser Gardens to the north of the city centre. The old ...
Advantages: Compact, cultured, loads to do Disadvantages: Limited "old town", some may find it lacking vitality
and museums dotted around the city but the main concentration is around Museum Mile, close to the university. We visited the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn; this museum tells the story of the area from prehistoric times to the present day with an emphasis on the character, economy and crafts of the region. It plays hosts to temporary exhibitions but we went primarily to see the remains of Neanderthal man and a great deal of the exhibits are linked to this.
Next stop was the small Altstadt or OldTown; this area in Bonn is not very remarkable, not especially old or scenic but reasonably attractive. The centre of Bonn has one or two striking buildings such as the Doppelkirche but lacks the appeal of other German cities in the area like Koblenz or Cologne.
In the afternoon we visited the August Macke Museum and Gallery devoted to the life ...

back I couldn't do it, but hubby and boys did and thought it was amazing if not a tad scary. The inside is breathtaking, amazingly high, stained glass and spheres everywhere, steeped with history, incense wafts in the air. I looked at the beautiful crib, lit a few candles and said a few prayers, I could have spent hours there.
We spent a few hours at this market, drinking the yummy mulled wine, gluweine, from pretty decorated mugs that you have the option to buy when you pay for the drink, we did, as a lot do, and sipped it as we perused the crafts, sweet delicacies, and a wealth of gifts to buy.
~Alter market~
This was one of our favourite markets. It's in front of Cologne's Town hall, in the heart of Altstadt (OldTown)
We visited this in the evening and it truly was a magical experience. The boys also found this ...
