Olinda is a magic city. Situated in the North-East of Brazil, this still medium-size village is full of remains of its glorious colonial past. The best time to go there is during Carnival. It is virtually impossible to find accommodation during this period unless you book months in advance or know someone of the locals. When I went there, I was lucky enough to stay with some friends, if you are not in the same situation, Recife is not too far away, there are frequent bus shuttles and you may be luckier to find accommodation there. The Carnival is crazy. 5 days of revellery, and, differently from other cities in Brazil, there are not too many people from the favelas around and you feel really safe, plus a lot of local babes scantly dressed and in the mood for good fun, not like here in London!! Everyone is friendly and just want to enjoy life, if you se what I mean. You should also try “lancaperfume”, it tastes good.

Advantages: cosmopolitan; great dining, arts and sports scene; prettiest city in Oz Disadvantages: not very many at all - perhaps some unsafe areas at night, but only if you're alone
