Last September I was planning mine and my boyfriends first holiday and we wanted it to be good as it was our first holiday away together and we had a whole year to pay for it so we didn't mind what we spent.
After browsing the net for a good couple of hours and a lot of good reports from friends and relatives we decided on the Dominican Republic. I had a look at all the usual websites you check to get the most competitive price and I decided on booking with Portland direct who are a direct sell agent (that are part of the big Tui group including Thomson etc) After having a look through all the hotels and prices I finally settled for the 4* Gran Ventana beachresort in Playa Dorada (if you wondered why I keep using the term I it is because my boyfriend doesn't have any part in anything like this as it is my job and he is just lazy ...

The rooms, toilets, pool and hotel itself are very clean however there are issues with the kitchen. On 2 occasions, there were cockroaches swimming in the curry sauce and chicken dish in the buffet. When we complained, these were removed. Other guests had seen this too on separate occasions. Whether these came from the kitchen or landed in the food when it was presented, we will never know but still... its just nasty.
The majority of guests are cabin crew who can get very loud and obnoxious. We did actually befriend some nice cabin crew workers but the majority of them cause issues by offending paying guests at pool/bar etc by 'taking over the place', taking all the chairs, loungers, taking over the pool. . .
If you have already booked this go and enjoy it but go on trips and go to the beach, dont stay in ...
Advantages: friendly people, rooms, pools, public areas very well looked after, different themes everyday Disadvantages: food variation... but what was out was tasty!
. Unfortunately as stunning as the beach was, it was filled with beach sellers everyday so no sunbeds or relaxing down there! The complex also had a group of monkeys running around which were so funny and were great fun to watch... just make sure you close your balcony door when you go out!!!
Animation were very good, all different activites throughout the day although did leave you alone if you wernt interested. However if you take part you will get colored beads that you can swap in the gift shop, which is probably one of the cheapest hotels gift shops i have stayed in!
Evening entertainment was not too great, even the caribbean do it better, they do try, but we gave up by the 3nd night and chilled out in the bar.
They also do different tours every day to local attractions which look good, but we didnt do as only there for a short time.
