I visited this restaurant on 29th April for my 11th wedding anniversary. I am a vegan vegetarian and my hotel had booked my husband and I into this restaurant for that special meal. Apparently it is hard to get reservations at One if by Land, Two if by Sea and I understand from time to time there is a waiting list. One if by Land, Two if by Sea restaurant seats up to one hundred and forty dinners. So you can see it is popular. We were also told that it was not cheap!
It is situated in down town GreenwichVillage, just off of Seventh Avenue and is open Monday to Friday: 5:30pm - 11:00pm Saturday and Sunday: 5:15pm - 11:00pm whilst the Bar opens at 4:00pm daily. We choose to eat
at 8pm and our dinning experience was unhurried and lasted almost four hours. (The speed of the meal was our choice and not governed by the restaurant or the staff). I was getting really excited. The Executive Chef is Gary Volkov. I had heard of him!
We were unsure what to expect and had only read the description from the concierge’s guidebook. At One if by Land, Two if by Sea the dinner experiences wonderful, enjoying seasonal American cuisine fused with French cuisine in an 18th century landmark carriage house formerly owned by Aaron Burr. Flickering candle lights and live piano music enhance the colonial atmosphere. The restaurant only offers a three-course, prix-fixed menu for $63, seven nights a week. The menu does change seasonally and it is always full of aphrodisiacs like raw oysters, caviar and chocolate. It also offers the diner the fixed price 7-course Chef's tasting menu every night for $79, or $125 paired with wines, in addition to the 3-course menu. Not cheap I know but Shane and I were not disappointed for as promised there was roses on the table and soft romantic music in the background, with a real log fire at the hearth. The wine list is exceptional and I started the evening with champagne. It really helped us celebrate our wedding anniversary in style. We were seated in one of the intimate upstairs dinning rooms not in the large public room downstairs. It was very romantic as the live piano music drift upstairs and the light hint of aroma floated in the air all adds to the romantic ambience. Beautiful.
The headwaiter was very friendly and extremely helpful with my dietary requirements maybe to because I am English and eccentric to boot. Shane and I were both in evening dress. We had obviously made an effort rather some other diners that were dressed a little scruffily. The hotel had unfortunately, not informed the restaurant that I was a vegan vegetarian. The cuisine is American and French fusion of styles. The menu is set yet it still allows a choice of around six main dishes, however it does not normally cater for Vegans. The chef nevertheless was able to devise a meal for me within the menu framework and with ingredients available to him. I love the curried cauliflower soup. I could eat that forever. I think they thought I was a little eccentric but nothing was ever said at the table. My husband’s choice was Red Sea Bass, but the restaurant is famed for its Beef Wellington.
The meal we choose for our special evening consisted of five courses (but this has now been change to either three or seven courses) and following sweet, the headwaiter produced a marvellous chocolate creation, which proved to be inviting, however both my husband and I were full from our meal (plus I am allergic to chocolate) therefore Shane only managed a few mouthfuls. It seemed such a waste!
I was expecting to pay around $300.00 for the meal but the bill came in for just over half that amount at $180 and that included drinks. I was pleasantly surprised. The meal is not cheap as New York prices go, but the food is wonderful, service exceptional and the setting is out of this world. I loved it so much that I have already booked a table for my next visit, which I equally enjoyed the second time round.
Please note unless things have altered much, One if by Land, Two if by Sea is not suitable for a person in a wheel chair. I have been looking on some website that say it is accessible on the ground floor for wheel chair user, but have not tried it out myself.
