Advantages: Small, friendly, very pretty Disadvantages: Not easiest desination to get to from the UK
Most people in the UK have only heard of Maastricht in connection with the EC treaty, they couldn't tell you what it's about, nor could they tell you even which country it's in!
The city is tucked in the bottom left hand corner of the Netherlands, and surrounded on three sides by Belgium and Germany. It's also very close to France and Luxembourg is only a short car journey away.
Don't make the mistake of thinking it's in Holland - that's in the north of the Netherlands, it's the capital of Limburg provence.
I attended a business conference in the beginning of March 2003, and quite by accident managed to land in town at exactly the same time as 'carnival' - which they take very seriously - more about this later.
The old town is about one kilometre square, and is a maze of narrow pedestrianised streets there's a bunch of old ...
Advantages: Beautiful city, everything at walking distance Disadvantages: maybe the weather??
come by train. First do London-Brussels by Euro star. Then Brussels-Liege, if you want by TGV. Finally the short ride Liege-Maastricht with a local train. As you can see, not the easiest destination to reach from the UK, but definitely worth it.
What is there????
Worth it because Maastricht is a relatively small city (140.000 inhabitants) with a rich history. The Spanish once tried to take the city, Napoleon was charmed by it and D'Artagnan, the fourth musketeer, died here in combat. The golden age of Holland, between 1600 and 1700, did have little influence on Maastricht. But after that, under the French influence, the city bloomed. Until the early 1900's the upper class spoke French in Maastricht.
The most interesting part of the city is the old centre. This stretches from the train station across the Maas River to the Vrijthof ...
Advantages: Small and light. Disadvantages: None so far.
An excellent little DSLR that embodies some older proven Nikon technology like the 10.2 megapixel CCD from the D60/D80 combined with a new 11 point focus system and a shutter mechanism tested to 100,000 cycles.
The body is small, perhaps too small for those with shovel sized hands but it is well made and feels very solid. With a camera this size there is no excuse to leave it at home.
The kit lens produces excellent results and is a good starting point at least.
Battery life is good and SDHC cards are a cheap and plentiful recording medium. As a first step into DSLR photography this is your camera whilst for those more experienced photographers looking for something more discreet and portable this is it.
There are no fancy whistle and bells it is just a good straightforward camera....what more do you need? ...
