Oh just in case you don't stay in the Orchard area, you can always get there by their tube (called MRT in Singapore). Three stations serve the stretch of Orchard Road (Orchard, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut - all along the North-South line).
To call it a road lined with shopping malls is an understatement. Fair enough, it has malls alongside the road, but they are huge malls! Everything you need from electronics (Lucky Plaza) to designer goods (Takashimaya, Paragon, DFS), it's all situated there.

If you want to sit down for some coffee and people watch? No problems too, as there are a number of coffee places where you can go to, Starbucks, Coffee Club, etc. Price ranges from S$4-S$6. Fancy a quick alcoholic drink? It's available for quite a hefty price comparing to the UK. A pint will usually set you back about S$10-12 during Happy Hours (usually from late afternoon to 8 or 9pm). Peranakan Place is where you will find a small stretch of nice and cosy pubs.
There are also plenty of restaurants there. I like Lawrys which serves up some really good steaks, the price ranges from S$50-90 just for the steaks, so it isn't really for budget travellers. For those who love trying local cuisine, fret not, as there are plenty of local food fare available. They have, what they call, food courts which scatters throughout the area, in the malls themselves.
There's too many things to write, and I can go on, but you should really check it out, if you're into shopping, enjoys what I mentioned above, and see for yourself at first hand.

Advantages: Clean, smart, everything works Disadvantages: Strict, souless, unfriendly, not a place for bargain hunters
OrchardRoad is the Oxford Street of Singapore. This is where you will find all the shopping mall and most of the popular departmental stores. The whole length of OrchardRoad is approximately 1 km from end to end.
The more popular places along OrchardRoad are Takashimaya, Paragon, Tang's, Far East and a few smaller shopping malls.
Shopping along OrchardRoad is expensive. There are hardly any bargains to be found. Food from foodcourts is relatively cheap and affordable. However, dining in restaurants is always pricey.
Like most parts of Singapore, OrchardRoad is very clean and neat. It is a souless place and very unfriendly. Unlike other cities around the world, OrchardRoad in Singapore lacks colour, "vibrations" and fun. One gets the feeling that "big brother" is watching you all the time. Very strict and be very careful ...
Advantages: Smart. Good Western food. Good hotels. Bright. Disadvantages: Pricey. Full of tourists. Difficult to find bargains
OrchardRoad in Singapore is the smart shopping and dining street par excellence. It is the main tourist drag in the Island Republic and houses a lot of the ultra smart but increasingly expensive one stop shopping centres,a number of top rate hotels, designer boutiques and a veritable plethora of mostly Western-style fast food joints and sophisticated restaurants. These are fairly pricey and not good value.
If you want to sample authentic local food get out of OrchardRoad and
head to Newton Circus for hawker food, Chinatown for great Chinese food and Little India, the area around the Serangoon Road, for fiery South Indian and Vegetarian food. You will be amazed at the quality of the food and the very affordable prices.

The city/country of Singapore is a destination a visit twice a year, at least. And one of my favourite sight is the Jurong Birds Park that is located north-west of OrchardRoad (if you are not familiar with Singapore, OrchardRoad is the main shopping area for tourists).
The Jurong Birds Park can be reached by bus or MRT (Singapore underground) but I suggest to us a taxi that is not expensive, it takes you directly to the entrance and can wait you as long as you like.
Some more advises.
You can visit the park by feet (walking) as I strongly suggest or by air-conditioned monorail (you can ride it as long as you like, get on and get off at the several stations located along the rail trail) that I don't' like because I suffer of claustrophobia.
The entrance ticket cost is around 1,50 Euro while 3 Euro is the cost for the monorail ...
