Recently I visited Tenerife for almost two weeks and this is another review of somewhere I visited. Another Tenerife review I have written is on Loro Parque and is quite a good review in my opinion! Anyway today I am going to review the Orchid Gardens.
While in Tenerife recently I visited the Orchid Gardens in Puerto de la Cruz. The garden was just up ... ...walk to from there! The orchid garden is a really interesting place to visit but it seemed to be very quiet –although apparently it is busier in the winter! This is a shame as the gardens are a really nice place just to be in and relax and should be enjoyed by more people and I wish that more people knew about them which is part of the reason for me writing this positive review.

While in Tenerife recently I visited the Orchid Gardens in Puerto de la Cruz. The garden was just up the road from the hotel I stayed in which is the Casablanca and probably took about 3 minutes to walk to from there!
The garden has a bit of a history to it and various famous people have visited there – if you visit you get a leaflet with details about the place. However the most famous person is Agatha Christie who was so inspired she wrote the book “The mysterious Mr Quin” – don`t ask me what it is about or whether it is good as I don`t have a clue! The garden is the oldest in Tenerife and is 230 years old! There is a section with a little display with some mannequins about Agatha Christie and her crime story which was based in the garden!
The garden is really pretty and does not just have a few orchids as that would be really boring! There are a wide range of plants which makes it so interesting. There are also lots of lovely little places to sit down in the garden and maybe take a book to read or even a DS!
I think the gardens were really quiet because they are quite small and not something that you would visit regularly so I don`t think locals visit often. Also I think the garden is not very well advertised and even though we stayed about 3 minutes away there was no mention of the garden or even a small leaflet! Also the gardens are a little more expensive than the Botanic Gardens nearby which seem to be a lot more popular although I think they are both about as good as each other!
Another good thing is that the gardens were quite cool and shady because of all the plants around so it would be a nice place to go if you want to escape from the heat. The gardens have lots of other things apart from orchids including a pond with koi-carp in it – which is very nice and has some lovely fish in it which are massive. The pond is really pretty and well worth taking a few photographs of. There is also a little cafe at the back which is in a lovely spot to sit down in and the food and drink was a reasonable price and quite nice to relax. There were also a cage with some birds in, lots of interesting plants including cacti, bonsai, a few palm trees and obviously a section of orchids. There were also some native plants like the beautiful strelitzia (not sure if that is spelled correctly!)
While visiting I somehow managed to take over 100 pictures on my camera and I have got some great ones! Therefore I would recommend taking a camera with you if you are visiting!
Overall the orchid gardens are a little bit of a hidden gem and well worth visiting if you are in Puerto de la Cruz as they are pretty, interesting especially if you like gardening and I guess even more so if you like orchids! Although you do have to bear in mind it is reasonable small and you won`t find yourself spending a whole day in there!
The gardens were open till 3:30 in the afternoon when I visited.
The Entry was reasonably cheap and about €10 for two adults so the gardens are reasonably cheap but are more expensive than the nearby Botanic Gardens.

Advantages: an enchanting place Disadvantages: none
One of the lesser known attractions of PuertodelaCruz, the resort in the north of Tenerife, is the OrchidGarden Sitio Litre. The mansion was built in 1730 and in 1774 the British merchant Archibald Little bought it together with a piece of land which he converted into a beautiful garden. Sitio is the Spanish word for site and the surname Little somehow changed into Litre. In 1856 the Vice Director of Bristol College, Charles Smith, purchased the property, his family owned the house until 1996, the mansion is still privately owned, but the garden has been opened to the public.
Together with the ticket the visitors get a brochure and a list of all the plants and their names (which is to be returned), number plates are stuck into the soil so that the visitors interested in botany can inform themselves. A map shows the lay-out, but ...
