I booked this holiday for myself and my mum to the Delta Orlando Hotel on Mayor Blvd, just off International Drive. This hotel complex is rated as a 2 star but it's of a really high standard with all the modern conveniences you would want in a hotel.
Although we both have driving licences neither of us felt confident enough to brave the roads of Orlando so we didn't book car hire. If I was ever to go back to Orlando I would consider car hire because getting around without a car can be difficult because, as the majority of Floridians have cars, the public services are not that great. This didn't prevent us from getting to see everything we wanted to visit, however, we ended up taking taxis everywhere apart from Disney where there was a regular service which picked up from all the hotels in International Drive.
I loved Disney and had a thoroughly good time in Orlando but one thing which annoyed me was the lack of pavements to walk along.
We got a taxi to one of the shopping malls one evening. The mall wasn't that far from our hotel, probably about a 15 minute walk. We called several taxi firms in an attempt to get a taxi back to our hotel but we were told by all of them that we would have to wait at least an hour before anyone could pick us up.
We decided to walk back which proved to be a big mistake. We could see our hotel practically opposite us but there was no way we could cross the multiple lane motorway in front of us, and there was no bridge or underpass to go through. We had no idea what to do apart from maybe walk back to the mall and try to call a taxi again.
Just then a car stopped beside us and 2 really dodgy looking guys with Southern drawls and a car full of empty beer cans said that if we gave them some cash they would take us to our hotel. I was hesitant at first but couldn't be bothered walking back to the mall. We gave them $4 and they took us back to our hotel. They explained that they spent their evenings driving up and down the motorway picking up tourists who'd got lost and taking them back to their hotels for a few dollars. I was very grateful to them for helping us out but equally aware that we had put ourselves in a very dangerous situation.
