Although I was born and raised in Oslo, Norway, I have never traveled much in my own country. Last summer, I had a friend visiting from the United States and I decided this was my opportunity to see something beyond Oslo. My friend only stayed with me for a week, so between seeing the sights of Oslo and experiencing its nightlife, not much time was left. This was the main reason why we decided to take a trip with “Norway in a Nutshell”.

“Norway in a Nutshell” is an extremely popular trip in Norway that lets you experience some breathtaking scenery. We started the trip by taking the train from Oslo to Bergen, although you can start and end your trip at any leg of the journey you chose. The train takes you from Oslo, through beautiful mountain landscape. I think I even saw a glacier! The first stop of the journey is Finse, the highest station on the Bergen line. From there, you take the Flåm railway line down the Flåm valley. This railway line has been described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. It goes from the Finse station to the fjord in just 20 km, all the way accompanied by mountains and waterfalls. Breathtaking!

Next up is a fjord cruise which will take you from the Aurlandsfjord and through Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Norway. The dramatic scenery, with huge mountains climbing straight out of the fjord, makes you wonder what happens to the tiny little houses in the winter.

The ship docs in Gudvangen, where a bus will take you up the spectacular Stalheimskleivane, which with its hairpin bends, is not for those afraid of heights. Try to focus on the scenery! The bus drops you of in Voss, where a train takes you to Bergen.

In bergen you can either opt for a few hours of seightseeing before taking the night train back to Oslo, or , and this would be my recommendation, you spend the night in Bergen and enjoy an entire day in this beautiful and charming city before going back to Oslo.
With no overnight stays, the trip takes almost exactly 24 hours and is the perfect way to get a taste of what Norway has to offer. I highly recommend this trip to anyone going to Norway – you won’t regret it!

Excellent review Helene. Will try and persuade the better half to accompany me to Norway. Might have been useful to include prices, contact details, etc. But sounds phenomenal none the less.

What MHam said, really. I'd love to have heard more about the trip, espcially how much it cost and where you book it. Norway is my favourite place in the world, I lived for 17 years in Drammen and a summer in Bergen (in the mountains near Fana). My oldest daughter still lives there and my youngest plans to go back to live when she's 18. Welcome to Ciao (from one who's been gone for a while). ~Sharon
