Advantages: Selection of books, atmosphere, good website Disadvantages: Parking, distance from most of the UK
I am an avid book reader & purchase books new & seconhand. The new ones are bought from places such as Amazon & the supermarkets & the used ones from Green Metropolis web site or the odd book sale.
At book sales the choice of books can be limited to dog eared Mills & Boon novels, Delia Smith's cookbooks from a generation ago, how to operate a computer using Windows 3.1 & a 1954 steam train spotter's guide. All absorbing stuff to some people, but not for me.
About once a month I drive to the North of England & pass a lovely town called Alnwick just off the A1 between Newcastle & Edinburgh. In Alnwick is one of the largest second hand bookshops in Britain located inside the old Victorian Alnwick railway station called Barter Books. In stock are about 350.000 books & there is something for everyone.
HOW TO FIND IT
To find Barter ...
Advantages: This is a book lovers dream. Disadvantages: Alnwick is a little out of the way for most readers.
One of Northumberlands best kept secrets is Alnwick's Barter Books. This huge collection of over 350,000 books in all shapes and sizes composes one of the largest second hand collections in Europe and it is certainly worth a visit.
The Shop
~~~~~~~~
Barter books is was originally opened back in 1991 by Mary Manley. It is housed in Alnwick's old Victorian railway station which gives it a quaint old feel.
When we enter we are taken first to a small room in which one finds the paperbacks by there hundreds; autobiographies, fiction, crime, romance, you name it. There are also old tapes although I havn't looked at these in any detail. A traditional open fire heats this small first room but it can get cold as you move back into the old station.
The second room contains the travel books, art, poetry and plays as well as ...
Advantages: Price, amazing offers, points Disadvantages: Only one, see below
preferences and even track all your orders in the My Account section. You can also download the brochures and order through the quick shop if you have the book codes already. They always deliver on time, occasionally quicker, I've chosen standard delivery before and received the books in 2 days. You can order by phone, fax, post or online and you pay at the time of ordering by credit or debit card, cheque or postal order.
The only down side is that the really good offers sell out very quick and can take a long time to come back into stock. I've been waiting for the classic Mr Men collection to come back in for about 4 months now!
I've only ever had one problem, I paid for a book and It didn't come, I had to chase them twice before I got my refund. This was about 5 years ago, before I joined online.
