Ouarzazate (Morocco)

Ouarzazate. This town was built by the French. The drive from Marrakesh takes you through a couple of passes in the mountains and is probably worth the travel on its own. The town itself is mainly a base for exploring the surrounding valleys. It can be cold in winter, and some hotels are not very well equipped. There seems to be quite a lot of tourists in this town, may be partly due to the fact there is even an airport. The best way to visit the surrounding valleys is with your own means of transport. You can hire a car, but this is not very cheap, especially if you choose a 4wd. Despite rumours that accommodation can be scarce, we did not experience any trouble in finding a place for the night.
