A Brazilian dynasty

Advantages: Beautifully written
Disadvantages: A slow and not very gripping read

Francisco Manoel da Silva is a poor Brazilian who seeks his fortune by sailing to the Kingdom of Dahomey on the West coast of Africa (now Benin and Togo) to pursue a career as a slave trader. Although he does make a lot of money, his life is fraught with problems, including war and his relationship with the King of Dahomey, who decides to lock da Silva up when he gets bored with him. Fortunately, the King is deposed and his brother, with whom da Silva is close friends, takes over, which bodes well for da Silva's future career and he becomes a famous personage in the area, known as Ouidah. Despite great wealth, a fabulous home and as many women as he can handle, da Silva still longs to go home to Brazil. Will his dream of returning to Brazil a rich man come true? Or will his colourful life continue to throw challenges in his way ...

A hotel of excellence

Advantages: Great location and enhanced security
Disadvantages: hotel restaurant doesnt have the best of foods

I recently paid a month visit to Nigeria over the summer, and I must say I had alot more fun than I thought I would. I visited many places and stayed also in several hotels, at the expence of my mum! :-). But one hotel that did make an impression on me was the Motel Benin Plaza, which I must say is just as good as any hotel you would find in England. Rooms: They have several room options, from the basic single room to your very own bungalow. Unsure of which room I wanted to stay in I requested to check every single room they had on offer. The single bedroom was quaint but quite small for me and my mum to obviously share, but if anyone does go to visit on their own I'm sure they would love it as it looked so comfortable and had a calming atmosphere. With one single bed and a television, also with a shower and toilet and built ...

Review of Motel Benin Plaza, Benin

Aye? Erm.. nay!

Advantages: Still rather unique
Disadvantages: Sounds quite similar to modern pop

A while back Angelique Kidjo played a concert in Warsaw and one of my students was raving about her as she said she met and spoke to her fans individually after the concert for a considerable time and makes beautiful music. I'd actually never heard of her but realised that I actually had one of her cd's as part of a larger package I had bought for resale. Aye by Angelique Kidjo is supposedly said to be her best album and it was released in 1994 on the Fontana Island label. I was pretty disappointed, it wasn't what I expected at all. I expected a modernised version of West African roots music but found that this artist from Benin had more in common to today's crap pop than pop at its best and there was not enough of the African sound for my liking. This I blame on the US and UK producers who clearly made it sound more poppy ...
