Proves you should never judge a book by its cover

Advantages: Excellent service, good food, reasonable location, friendly owners
Disadvantages: None I am aware of

...to stay, when one of the girls in the office stumbled across the Victoria hotel in Abingdon Road, Oxford at £62/single room, per night. We duly booked our three rooms and waited with trepidation based on other experiences. On our arrival, my colleagues were a little apprehensive without justification. The hotel is run by an Eastern European gentleman and his wife, who after advising us that we couldn't smoke in the rooms welcomed us like long lost ...
...a number of towels. All the facilities were quite new and so clean you could have eaten your dinner out of them. An iron & ironing board is available on request, although be prepared to do this little exercise in public. The hotel has 20 rooms, all en-suite, and one with a four poster bed. THE BAR This was small, and choice was limited to soft drinks(£1.20), spirits, chilled bottled beers (£2.30) and wine, accompanied by a bowl of crisps. There is ...

3 Star hotel? Are you kidding me?

Advantages: Close to city centre, cheap compared with other hotels
Disadvantages: Thin walls, poor/no service, no cleaning, cold shower, paltry breakfast

...my parents in Oxford in Victoria House Hotel, seeing that it promised satin and silk and all sorts of luxuries in their website and leaflets, and it was very close to city centre. My parents were VERY unhappy with it and I feel it's important to reflect their views. - Booking the hotel was pretty troublesome. My dad rang twice and I rang twice and finally I got through to the receptionist. His English wasn't very good so it was difficult to get ...
...my questions. I eventually managed to book a room but had to give him my credit card details. - The website promised £69 a night for a double room (2 guests) but when my parents arrived, the surly receptionist pointed to a board on the wall that said £80 a night. When I asked her why the price had changed, she said she didn't know anything about the website. Never mind, my parents had to stay there. To be fair, £80 a night for a double room in Oxford ...

The Other Half...

Advantages: You've never eaten so well
Disadvantages: You've never paid so much to eat so well

...Blanc’s famous hotel and restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, in Great Milton, Oxfordshire. We also turned this into a celebration of my brother-in-law’s successful completion of the London Marathon in 4 hours and 37 minutes (good on him!) -------------------------------- Yes, I know… -------------------------------- …that Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons is a hotel. However, the restaurant is promoted for non-residents, ...
...have tea. Tea at Le Manoir isn’t just a cup of the old PG tips! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Experience ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We were served tea and delicious home made biscuits in one of the lounges (and yes, we did pay extra for the tea, it was not part of the package) – we sat by a bay window. There are three or four rooms (maybe even five) that serve as lounges – some are smoking, some are non-smoking, but they ...

Holiday Inn Express, Oxford

Advantages: Very clean, excellent value for money, breakfast provided.
Disadvantages: A few more nearby dining options would make it a perfect place to stay.

I stayed here for a few nights in October 2007 whilst visiting Oxford. The parking lot is large, providing more than ample space even during a fully-booked night. Being right next to the Kassam Stadium, this hotel is super for those wanting to partake in watching Oxford United. Check-in was very fast and efficient; the staff were very welcoming and polite. Our rooms were on the third floor which was just a short elevator ride from the lobby. The ...
...sized sofa bed in the room too. The bathroom area was incredibly clean and modern. No bathtub is provided, but the power showers are excellent. Plastic cups, shower caps, soap, face towels are provided in the bathroom. A nice touch: if you forget any bathroom items then you can ask reception for complementary replacements. Within the room you get basic tea/coffee making facilities which include the same items as the other hotel chains in this category. ...

Embodiment of old-time elegance and luxury

Advantages: Opulent environment and decor, fresh haut cuisine dishes, excellent location, friendly and helpful staff
Disadvantages: Expensive

...Oxford, they stayed at the Old Parsonage on Banbury Road. We enjoyed a lovely dinner there, and I'm going to write a little about my experience of it to help you decide whether you want to stay there too. OVERVIEW The Old Parsonage is a charming and serene establishment located a short walk from Oxford city centre (5 or 10 minutes maximum) and less than an hour from London if travelling by car. During the summer, the building itself is almost obscured ...
...traditional luxuriant decor, gives the Old Parsonage an ambiance like that of a private members club. Past the indoors dining area and the elegant bar (where refined looking ladies and gentlemen gently sip at port, whiskey, and martinis), there are 30 recently refurbished rooms situated over two floors around a herb and lavender planted root terrace. ROOMS Each of the 30 epicurean rooms is individually designed with air conditioning, flat screen ...
