The Oxford Tube is a bus service which runs from Oxford's Gloucester Green bus station to Victoria in London and back again via the M40. It has the following stops throughout Oxford and London: Oxford: Gloucester Green Bus Station Speedwell Street (getting on only, Mon-Fri 0800-1800) St Aldates (getting off only) High Street St Clements Oxford Brookes University Headington Shops Gladstone Road (getting off only) Green Road roundabout (getting on only) Sandhills Thornhill Park and Ride
The bus also stops at Lewknor, close to junction 6 of the M40
London: Shepherd's Bush Notting Hill Gate Marble Arch Victoria
The main reasons for getting the bus are: 1) its price - it is cheaper than the train at £12 single and £14 return for an adult, £6 single and £7 return for under16s/over60s and for students and young persons railcard holders &10 single and £11 return. The train on the other hand is about £21 return for an adult and £13 for a railcard holder. 2) Its frequency - the Oxford Tube runs every ten - fifteen minutes in both directions during the day and about every twenty - thirty minutes at night. 3) The fact that it runs until about 3am in both directions.
However, this bus takes FOREVER. It is not the actual motorway driving which takes the time, it is getting in and out of London and Oxford, because of all the various stops it has to make. Particularly getting in and out of Oxford, surprisingly. It is quite frustrating that a journey which takes less than an hour on the train takes (supposedly) 100 minutes, and on most of the trips I've made actually takes a lot longer owing to rush hour traffic.
Other disadvantages include occasional crowds going from Oxford to London for the clubs, getting drunk (on the way there) and being drunk (on the way back), especially late at night and at weekends.
However if you want to save money, and get the advantage of the night travel and the extra stops, it is a good option. The double decker bus has lots of seats and is comfortable and spacious. Tickets can be bought on the bus, or in advance on the Oxford Tube website, and come in the form of a normal paper bus ticket.
