Having been with Ciao for a while I thought I'd update this op and tell you about my girlfriend....we get on so well... The other night I got home and after a while told her to take my shoes and socks off, which she did..and then I told her to take my shirt and tie off ..which again she did. I then asked her to take my trousers off...which again she did..now comes the interesting bit...I asked her to take my underwear off...which she did with pleasure, and then I said "And don't ever wear them again!". After this epic event I got a bottle of wine for her...I asked the guy for two bottles but he wouldn't pay it to me (think about it!!)
I travel to France about once every three weeks for pleasure, and would always use the ferry from Dover to Calais rather than the tunnel because the crossing is relatively short, enjoyable and cheap. I am going to try the routes from Portsmouth and Poole shortly and will probably do further ops on the subject.
Many newspapers currently have offers to travel for £1 as a footpassenger or in the region of £22 for a car and five passengers. Also , the departures are either every 30 minutes or an hour depending on the time of day, and journey times reliable at about 80 minutes . Furthermore, Dover is very accessible to both the M2 and M20 motorways, and in Calais on leaving the dock area one immediately joins excellent roads from where the journey times to a lot of Europe is not excessive.
All of the ferries I have ever used have been quite new, spacious and clean and have excellent facilities including several choices of restaurants and bars. The shops on board are very large also, the size of these ships has to be seen to be believed really, about 8 floors tall !!
My main pleasure on the ferry is being able to buy duty paid cigarettes and other items at massive savings compared to the UK, for example 800 Superkings cost generally £20 on the ferry compared to £40 here, so half price !! I have never had any delays in all my years of travelling with P & O, AND if I have ever been late to arrive, which is quite frequent , they always get me onto the next ferry with an absolute minimum of delay.
A tip to persons not travelling as frequently as myself, always buy a copy of the Kent Messenger before embarkation, there are always many special offers in Calais or for the journey itself in this paper - this week I received two free bottles of wine and a free case of Stella Artois.
Smoking and drinking, I cannot afford to not go to France on a regular basis , plus I always get an excellent three course meal for two including drinks for £36 approx. when I am there ,following a very good day's shopping and sight seeing.

Advantages: A cheap way to watch Whales and Dolphins Disadvantages: Standing for long hours
I have travelled on the P&O Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry twice now, as a cheap way of seeing a wide variety of Whales and Dolphins.
You can get a cabin for two people for about £80 each, this does not include any meals or any type of cabin service. You sail out on the Pride of Bilbao, a large car carrying ship.
There are three main restaurants, a breakfast and lunch type diner, as well as several bars. There is also a cinema, swimming pool, child minding ... ...games for the kids and night time disco and cabaret.
The best time to go on the crossing is between late July to mid September, the peak of activity for the Whales and Dolphins is August, thats when I go.
The days the boat leaves portsmouth are Friday coming back Monday, and Monday coming back Wednesday, and Wednesday coming back Friday.
Why is the Portsmouth-Bilbao ferry the best way to see the Whales and Dolphins?, it is the route the ferry ...

Advantages: Longer crossing gives the driver time to recuperate Disadvantages: Children can get a bit bored
I like P&O European Ferries. I live in the South West of England, so they are more accessible for me than Dover. They are quite a bit more expensive than their Dover associates, but, the comfort available makes up for the cost difference.
Last year, I travelled with them three times to various ports, and I hope to give you all a quick run down of the merits and demerits of each sailing. Break out the rum, and here we go.
Easter weekend 2000. Portsmouth-Le ... ...in our very old Jaguar, for a long weekend break. Thursday night 22.15 going over, and 15.45 crossing coming back. The total cost including a two berth economy cabin on the overnight crossing came to £147.00. Oh no, I hear you gasp. You could have gone from Dover-Calais for about £70.00. Yes, I know I could, but when your car does about 20 miles to the gallon, and really doesnt like having to be driven at 70 mph for such a long way, you start to ...

Advantages: Fast Cat saves on journey time, plenty of drink bargains in France, reasonably priced for day trip Disadvantages: Torture in inclement weather if you suffer with seasickness.
The British weather has been so pleasant this August, we decided to go on a day trip to Cherbourg. We usually take the car over to France in December to stock up on wine, beer and spirits for Christmas. The sea is considerably rougher in December and, in the past, I have badly suffered from seasickness. This time we decided to go as foot passengers. Living in Portsmouth, the ferry port is only 5 minutes away so this is a bonus.
We decided we wanted ... ...couple of hours earlier and the crossing takes just over two hours. We planned to go on the 7am sailing and return on the 7pm. This would give us a good day in Cherbourg. If you are going on a day return and you opt for the boat, you only get two hours ashore which is fine if you have a car and are stocking up on booze, but not very helpful if you are a foot passenger.
We telephoned 5 days prior to departure and the economy seats were fully booked ...

Advantages: Good terminals, excellent ships Disadvantages: Bar expensive
Usually when I travel to the continent I am going over towards Belgium, Holland or Germany. For our holidays this year (you will be able to tell when I went by the gap in my reviews) we went to the Cote Sauvage (Atlantic Coast) region of France. We booked through the Caravan Clubs excellent members service and sailed through P&O European Ferries from Portsmouth to Le Havre and returned on the same route.
After a pleasant couple of days in Portsmouth ... ...the port at about 1pm and the booking in was uneventful, we boarded on time and as a caravanner we were among the first to board. Boarding was easy and competed speedily and efficiently. We did then go quickly from the car bay to the decks but there turned out to be no need to rush as there was plenty of room in all the public areas. The ship was the ‘Pride Of Le Havre’ and it was very spacious. The sailing seemed to be fully booked but ...

Advantages: Comfortable, relaxing, reasonably priced. Disadvantages: Time of crossing
This is not a view about a particular bad crossing or a good one, but some general advice about P&O Ferries as a whole.
Having worked on the 'Pride of Portsmouth' and 'Pride of Le Havre' on the Portsmouth to Le Havre run for over a year I'ld like to offer an impartial view of the whole operation, services offered and general quality.
For those of you reading this who are thinking about going on a crossing and are a little apprehensive about the ... ...the largest and most comfortable ferries afloat.
They are both equipped with computer controlled stabilisers that reduce any rolling movement and ensure a good nights sleep - or drinking what ever you prefer!!
The food on board in the restaurent is good and reasonably priced - in my opinion the best place to eat. Otherwise you also have a self service style buffet 'cafe' which is cheap and of a much lower standard - just like you would expect to ...

Advantages: Very comfortable ferries, loads to do, generally good service Disadvantages: The occasional slip-up
. After this, the Townsend Thoresen brand name disappeared and vessels were re-painted into a dark blue, P&O livery. In an attempt to eradicate all memories of the Herald, any vessels with ?Free Enterprise? in the name were re-named to the ?Pride of..? prefix (E.g. Pride of Dover).
The company re-braded itself as P&OEuropeanFerries. Until 1992 not much happened, then 4 huge new freighters were introduced to the Dover-Zeebrugge run. Well, 3 were, the fourth became the passenger vessel ?Pride of Burgundy? which operates Dover-Calais now. Various new routes (such as Portsmouth-Bilbao) opened, while others ? Dover-Boulogne, closed, and others (Dover ? Zeebrugge, Felixtowe ? Zeebrugge) were relegated to freight ? only status.
In 1997 P&O bought out North Sea Ferries, and merging the Hull ? Rotterdam/Zeebrugge routes with P&O?s Felixtowe routes ...

Advantages: Modern, Attractive, Stylish, Comfy, Enjoyable Disadvantages: Expensive at times, can get fully booked
Travelling on the North Sea has in recent times developed a bad reputation. Passengers usually expect any old tub waiting to carry them on an overnight crossing, with poor cabins and no proper facilities.
But no more. P&OFerries have re-branded themselves with a new cruise-style background, and it really does work.
Company Background
----------------------------
The company started in 1966 as North Sea Ferries, a joint venture between P&O and Dutch shipping giant Nedlloyd. Having begun with a passenger service from Hull to Rotterdam, the company quickly expanded to operate a passenger service to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge and various freight routes.
Not much changed till 1996 when P&O bought out Nedlloyd?s share to become a wholly owned P&O company. In 1997 P&OEuropeanFerries freight routes from Felixstowe to Rotterdam ...
Advantages: Regular extensive bus network, park and ride service Disadvantages: Horrible bus and train station, No railway stations in suburbs, old buses
being staged at the KC Stadium as west hull can become very congested. Clive Sullivan Way (A63) and many local roads in west, north, and east Hull are at a standstill at rush hour. Avoid if possible! Planes depart to Amsterdam and other European destination from Humberside Airport located a short 15 minute drive over the Humber Bridge. Large P&Oferries leave the eastern docks for Holland every night and arrive the following morning.
- STATIONS -
Hull station is to be avoided if possible. It is a very unpleasant place to wait for a bus or train. Built by Hull City Council as a tempory measure, the bus station consisting of some corregated metal and a few portakabins is dirty, smelly and cold. There is not a proper ticket office or waiting room and can be a 'hang-out' for rowdy teenagers. The railway station next door is just as ...
