I should like to dedicate this op to all those who have not been on a cruise before or been on a P&O cruise on the Oriana. If you read this from start to finish you too could want to be spoilt for life. I hadn't cruised with P&O before this trip and it has definitely changed my understanding as to what is real value for money on a holiday. My biggest problem is in trying to be brief - I could write a book on this voyage but I will spare you that!
THE REASON FOR THE CRUISE We started to plan this holiday about 18 months before setting sail and the purpose for this special treat was to celebrate our 25th Silver Wedding Anniversary. The fact that the holiday would also include our daughter's 13th birthday was an extra. Although I had been on one cruise before, a Thompson Mediterranean disaster, my wife had been on many P&O cruises before we married and swore by them. Indeed, we actually got engaged on the 'old' Oriana when we had the pleasure of seeing my mother-in-law-to-be off on a cruise.
So we decided on P&O and although we would have chosen to go on the 'new' Oriana for obvious reasons, we also chose it because of its itinerary - but I'll come on to that later.
THE COST We booked the holiday 12 months in advance as this would allow us to choose our cabin and more to the point, give us a 37% discount. Not being mega rich, we could not have taken this trip without the discount and when I say 'we chose our cabin' I really mean we chose the location of the 'basic' twin cabin. So, whilst I'm on this subject, let's get the 'cost' details out the way so that al the plus points can be seen in perspective. Standard rate before discount for an adult in a 4 berth 'basic' cabin for two weeks: £1995, and wait for it, the best bonus of all - children under 16 went for 10% of the standard rate! That was so good that we invited our daughter's best friend along to keep her company. To save you fingering your calculator,
that brings the total to £2765. Had we have been giga rich, we could have opted for the top grade of cabin (a suite with balcony) which would have set us back a mere £11,429!
THE ACCOMMODATION Now before your imagination starts to conjure up visions of 4 people being couped up in a small box room, let me tell you what you actually get with a standard 'basic' twin cabin: two lower beds with two upper pullman berths, bathroom with shower, wash basin and WC, wardrobes and drawer space, two seater corner sofa, chair and table, vanity table/ writing desk, TV and radio, safe, hairdryer, refrigerator and telephone. It's functional, spotlessly clean, comfortable and fully air-conditioned. We used it to sleep, wash and dress and spent as little time in it as possible simply because there was far too much to do around the rest of this magnificent ship.
THE SHIP The ship itself consists of: 11 passenger decks, 3 swimming pools & a children's paddling pool, 5 jacuzzis, 10 bars, 2 main restaurants, pizzeria, theatre, nightclub/disco, dance floors & lounges, cabaret lounge, casino, card room, writing room & library, 2 shops, hair & beauty salon, gymnasium & deck sports, sauna & massage, children's and teenagers' rooms, and a nursery.
The Oriana is a 69,000 tons floating village with 794 crew looking after its 1822 passengers - that's 1 crew member for each 2.3 passengers and explains why P&O are able to pamper its guests. In a nutshell, Oriana oozes opulence, elegance and unadulterated class. The fittings and decor throughout are exquisite.
THE SERVICE On arrival at Southampton docks, we removed our luggage from our car and handed the car keys to a porter. Our car was driven away and parked for the duration of the holiday - our luggage was whisked away and as if by magic it re-appeared next in our cabin. From this point on, the service given by the Staff was First Class and nothing could be faulted.
We were treated like royalty - all the Staff had impeccable manners and charm and were incredibly smart. Our Cabin Steward, Lawrence, must have been telepathic - he always 'just appeared' whenever you thought you needed him and nothing was too much for him.
For dinner, we had a table reserved for the 4 of us in one of the main restaurants for the entire holiday. Here two Waiters (Cruz & Rashon) looked after all our needs and those of two more tables serving 14 people in total. In addition to their care, we had Philippe, the Wine Waiter. On entering the Dining Room after being greeted by Frankie, the Head Waiter, you were 'seated' at the table by Cruz and Roshan who unfolded your napkin and placed it on your lap - all very old fashioned and very appreciated - so rare these days! Throughout the meal you never touched a bottle of wine or water - your glasses were always topped up by Philippe who instinctively knew when to be at your side. I've included the names of the people who looked after us simply because I will never forget them - they were truly professional and I have the utmost respect for them.
THE FOOD It's reassuring to know that with P&O if there is nothing on the menu that takes your fancy (an impossibility!), then you only need to ask. What's more there is an unwritten rule which states that if you can't make your mind up between 2 puddings, don't struggle, have both of them! You certainly will not go hungry aboard this boat. You'll be served breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and for those who are still peckish, there is a midnight buffet! Even though they are catering for the masses, the quality of the food is first class and to illustrate this, I want to include a typical Dinner Menu just to get your mouth watering. This will also show why Dinner was always the biggest problem of the day - how on earth can you choose just one item per course!
MENU - 17th April 2001
Wild Boar Terrine with Armagnac, Prunes and Toasted Brioche
Deep Fried Wedges of Camembert served with a Plum and Apple Compote
ENTERTAINMENT During the evening you can choose from having coctails in one of the many bars, testing yourself in one of the quiz nights, watch a film (all the latest releases) in the air-conditioned cinema, try your luck in the casino, go to a classical recital, listen to a dance band or enjoy the cabaret shows in the Theatre where the standards are just as good as many of the West End shows. Alternatively, you can dance the night away or just take things easy - it's up to you. But whatever you do, make sure you have enough energy left so that you can enjoy the next day's shore excursion.
PORTS OF CALL Our cruise was called the 'Canary Island Wanderer' stopping off at Vigo (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Madeira, Tenerife, Lanzerote, Gran Canaria and Casablanca (Morocco). On shore excursions you can either do your own thing or go on one of the many organised trips. Be warned: tickets for these are snapped up quickly and some can be quite pricey! Alternatively, you may decide to simply relax and sunbathe onboard the boat.
EXTRA COSTS/PAYMENT ON BOARD If you are not familiar with cruising, money does not exchange hands onboard the ship. At the beginning of the cruise you open an account with the Purser for which you are given a plastic card. This is used for virtually everything on board: shore excursion tickets, drinks, sessions in the beauty salon etc. and you pay your final bill on the last day by debit or credit card. It couldn't be easier. But be careful, costs soon mount up. Our total 'Extras' bill came to just under £1000 (but we did drink for England!)
THE BAD POINTS Even a dream holiday has to have some bad points and I think the only downer on this holiday stems from the fact that you cannot guarantee that the crossing will be calm. Fortunately my wife and I have never been sea-sick in our lives but that wasn't the case for our two girls and probably 75% of the passengers as we crossed the Bay of Biscay. This stretch of water is notorious for its weather and a Force 11 Gale lined the pockets of the doctor on board. Injections are available and although they work wonders, they cost between £30 - £80 depending on the size of shot required.
OVERALL Although the Bay is notorious, it is not always rough so please do not let this put you off being spoilt for life!!!
I TOOK MY GRANDMOTHER ON HERE LAST YEAR AND AT NEARLY NINETY SHE WAS SPOILT TO THE CORE! IT IS A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE AND ANYONE THAT SCOFFS AT A CRUISE WITH P+O SHOULD TRY IT AND BE SILENCED! THE BEST THING HOWEVER HAD TO BE THE PISTACHIO AND ALMOND ICE-CREAM! I STILL YEARN FOR IT! I WOULD FORFIT TEN YEARS HOLIDAYS TO GO ON ONE CRUISE WITH P+O - FANTASTIC. JUST TO GET MY HANDS ON THAT ICE-CREAM. CHEERS.
