I've never had the urge to do a package tour until a few years ago. I always thought it was more fun to just turn up and get everything sorted yourself. I finally gave in, though, and let someone else arrange everything for me in advance, and hey, I saved a few pennies here and there. Well, package tours save you money by doing everything in volume. That means wherever you go, you'll end up in a big resort area chock full of English people and surrounded by pubs and English resteraunts. When I go to Spain I want to see the real Spain and meet Spanish people and even have a go at speaking their language. I don't want to stay at the Sunny Sea Dog on Angelaterre Road and eat at El Fishen Chippo while rubbing elbows with half the people I'm trying to get away from. If you want to find out what England would be like if it traded places with Portugal, fine, go on a package holiday. If you want to experience the real foreign country, do it yourself.
