-The railway line was opened in 1859, linking Paignton and Torquay with London. Now operated as a heritage railway. Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway operates from Paignton to Kingswear, passing the sea and the River Dart.
-The beautiful Oldway Mansion was built in the 1870s for Isaac Singer, the inventor of the sewing machine. Rebuilt in the early 1900's by his son in the style of Palace of Versailles. During World war I, it became an American Women's War Relief Hospital. Tennis courts and a bowling green were then added. During World war II it was used to house RAF cadets. It is now open to the public for free, there is a small museum and a cafe. The 17 acres of gardens are kept immaculate, including a maze. The inside of the building is just breathtaking, the art and architecture is definitely something to see. It is now home to Torbay council, also is very popular for holding civil ceremonies. The inside makes a stunning regency feel wedding and the gardens create a beautiful backdrop to the pictures.
-Paignton Pier was built in 1889, the 780-foot iron structure along with the Grand Pavillion. In 1919 a fire destoyed the pier-head, it wasn't repaired until after World War II. In the 1980's it was part of a major regeneration including a new pavillion. As you enter the pier there is a cafe, further down there is the arcade amusement area. Win (or lose) as much as you want. Great if the weather isn't good. Further down, you exit the pavillion to the outside amusements. There are dodgems, tramplines and a mega slide. Entrance is free.
-Paignton Zoo was opened in 1923 by Herbert Whitley, during World War II it took in animals and keepers from Chessington Zoo. It is now one of the biggest zoos in the UK showing animals from monkeys to bats and zebras to crocodiles. They are very commited to preserving endangered species and also to the education of its visitors. I visited the zoo when I was in secondary school, it has continued to improve since then. In February 2006, tragedy struck the zoo when a female giraffe and her one week old calf were killed in a fire in the elephant and giraffe house. The male giraffe died a few weeks later from smoke inhalation. The zoo is a registered charity. Owned by the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, who also run Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay zoo. There are 2 admission prices, standard admission and gift aid admission. The latter is 10% more (roughly £1) if you are a UK taxpayer, the government will then give an extra 28% on top of the donation. There are special rates of families, disabled and education visits.
-Quay West waterpark has eight slides; two kiddies pool areas, a swimming pool and various food/retail outlets. You can really spend a day here and the kids will love it. As you are going to get wet anyway, the weather isn't a problem.
Summary;
Paignton is heavily reliant on tourism, it has beautiful sandy beaches and amusements plus the things I have mentioned above. I live close by and it makes a nice day out with the family. There is also a large liscenced cinema right on the sea front which I visit quite reguarly. Various bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Paignton Green, behind the sea wall offers an alternative to lazing on the beach. It is also home to a funfair during the summer holidays. A perfect holiday spot for familes.
Advantages: Easy to find your way round, sea air, lots of pubs lol Disadvantages: Gets busy, seagulls, sometimes expensive
Paignton is situated in Torbay between Brixham and Torquay. It’s a busy wee town with plenty to do, it has a quaint charm and is easy to find your way round. A favorite holiday venue particularly with the older generation most people are very friendly. There are many different types of accommodation available in the area. If you’re planning on exploring the whole of Devon having a car is a major advantage but public transport is very good for tourists. ... ...grockle shops to buy your Paignton souvenirs. For the smokers there is a fantastic old fashioned style tobacconist (which doubles as a newsagent) on Hyde road, you can get all sorts of tobaccos and smoking accessories.
Entertainment
There is a large Apollo cinema on the sea front, I think they’ve got 8 screens and are always showing the latest films.

ARRIVAL AND CHECK IN
'
We arrived on Saturday morning 12th August 2006 at around 11am and although you are not able to book in until 2pm, the staff at the hotel are fantastic. They gave us the parking permit and told us we could come back at 12.30pm, as the room would be ready then. We parked up and went off for an hour or two around the harbour, which is situated about two minutes walk from the hotel. The staff are very warm and friendly and the overall appearance of the reception area is very clean, tidy and well maintained.

It was about August when I visited Paignton Zoo in Devon, which is the biggest in the UK. The zoo was founded in 1901 by Herbert Whitley, when he was only small, with a doting gift from his mother of a pair of canaries. He went on to raise and show finches, Dutch rabbits and silver Wyandotte poultry but the stars of his compilation were undeniably his adored blue and black cropper pigeons. The 1st monkeys arrived in 1910, & in 1911 Herbert bought the 1st of the Primley striking birds, a couple of sulphur crested cockatoos. Only a fragment of Paignton Zoo's history is written here, but you can read all about this amazing variety & its founder, Herbert Whitley, in the book 2Chimps, Champs and Elephants" by Jack Baker. This book is sold in the shop, & in retail outlets at the Zoo.

Advantages: Brilliant family day out which keeps the kids entertained Disadvantages: none
Me and a few family went to Paignton Zoo this week for 4th birthday treat for my niece and what a fab day out it was. Its been a few years since I went to this zoo & it has certinaly grown since I was last there.
The zoo is 80 acres so if you are planning on going then flat shoes are a must, there are also quite a few hills to walk, the zoo offers use of wheelchairs (electric & normal) so if you dont think you can walk around all of it then this is a very good solution.
If you are heading to the zoo you def need to set aside all day, you will never see everything in a couple of hours (we arrived at 10 and didnt leave until 4).
Once you enter the zoo you can choose which route you want to walk (there are several to choose from), we went through the reptile tropics & dessert first, this is where you find the snakes & spiders etc, then ...
