the views are gorgeous. You get your own bathroom, which is good for a budget in France (it's normally communal) prices start from about £13 pp
for a more upmarket hotel there's Hôtel de la Treille, which is in place louise-de-bettignies in vieux lille. Prices start from 69 euros.
Getting around is really easy. The metro runs through all of Lille and out to the suburbs (great if you want to go to Roubaix to see the Museum of Art and Industrie... a must see for any fashion addicts... original collections on display from John Galliano and Comme Des Garcons) There are also regular buses, make sure you buy your ticket before you board though! a 'carnet' of 10 tickets is best if you're planning on using public transport. these can be bought at any metro station.
There are a couple of good sized markets on a sunday in Lille. The smallest I know ...

really kind with us, you eat some specialities, and they do their own bear, with is really really good! It's not expensiv at all, for me and my girlfriend, last time I've paid less than 16£ for a whole meal!.
+ "Le rally", it's not a restaurant but tou can eat some meals not expensive at all, less than at McDonald! I know the owners as my school is next to them and as I often go there to take a coffe. rue Gambetta [street name], next to the subway (station "Repubilque - beauxarts" )
+ "Le balatum", this a a oub where most of people are skaters or rockers. You can listen to good rock, and postrock there, you can only take a drink there, but they give you a canddy with your coffe...really nice! This is a place where you meet good persons! 13 rue de la barre.
+ "le carré des halles" this is a bar-rock! sometimes some concerts ...
