It has been said that Sicily is Italy in concentrated form but that detracts from the many unique natures of the island which has enough of her own charms to win out over any of her mediterranean competitors.
Palermo as the capital of Sicily has come down a peg or two over the course of history, being, at one time the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies before the Bourbons transferred themselves to Naples.
But the vestiges of a regal past are very much evident in the old Sicilian capital. The most notable site being the Norman Palace at the gate of the Porta Nuova. It is possible to enter the palace to see the Royal Chapel but the opening hours are a little erratic (especially at the weekend) so it is always best to check when to go in advance. Whilst at Piazza Indipendenza (outside the palace), you should get the bus up to Monreale which remains, in my opinion, the most beautiful cathedral in the whole of Italy (and include everything which i have seen in Florence, Rome, Milan etc).
The other main areas to see in Palermo are the Teatro Massimo, the wonderful opera house. It is very easy and cheap to buy tickets there in the opera season. i went to a ballet for four euros and an opera for five euros and even if you hate the art form, it is worth it to see the amazing interior and to sweep down the external staircase!
The catacombs in Palermo are quite unique and very different from their Roman or Neapolitan counterparts! The monks in the Capuchin Abbey developed new ways of preserving bodies and you can see the corpses, still dressed in the clothes of the period in which they died, some still with hair and teeth and eery looks as their gazes meet you as you stroll around. A friend of mine joked that the monks that take you down to the catacombs are more scary than any of the bodies down there though! Just don't forget to give them some money for their trouble!
The markets in Palermo are on of the things for which the city is so famous. The Vuccuria is the most famous of the markets and is behind the San Domenico church. It is a mix of sights and smells that hits you as soon as you arrive and is certainly worth walking around.. some of the street food is quite interesting, but often consists of the internal organs of various animals so I tended to steer clear of it! If it looks chewy, don't eat it!!!
The other market, the Capo, is probably more traditional and you really can find anything you want!
These areas of the city are great in the day but probably best to steer clear of in the evenings and nights. The areas around the station really can be a bit scary. The areas closer to the Piazza Politeama is more open and bright and full enough of bars and restaurants to serve it's purpose.
The area by the port can also be a little rough if you don't know where you are going so it's probably best not to venture there at night time.
There is a high level of organised crime in Palermo but generally you won't see it. There is some petty crime but no more than in any other city in the world and the mix of the Phoenician, Arabic, Spanish, Norman and Greek sites, cuisine and people make it a wonderful city to visit.
Advantages: lots of cultural information mixed with lots of fun. Disadvantages: it can be really hot.(no really a problem is it?)
...sea. I advice to visit palermo because it is the capital of the city and all the beauty of the island is reflected in it. i would speacially recomend it to ancient stuff lovers and people who enjoys having a sun holidays summer mixed with some culturals day trip through the schedule. i would point out the principal caracteristics of the island:
-you can see the sea from mostly any point in the city.
-it has some of the most amazing museums about ... ...example of the mediterrean food. (in fact it is the best thing about palermo).
-it has lots of shops with the most famous italian designers.
-the atmosphere of this place is genuine.
i would recomend between one and two weeks to visit the city and if posible to have lots of trips to nearby cities. ...

Advantages: Good food Disadvantages: Can be dangerous
I visited Palermo twice, the first time for few hours and the second time for 2 days, guest of a colleague of mine. The memories I have from my first visit (we arrived by boat and where meant to go somewhere else in Sicily) is of a messy town, with a relatively ugly outskirt. The memories of my second visit are much more livelier. I visited the famous market of Vucciria and lived with locals for 2 days. I had superb food! Plenty of fish and delicious ...

Advantages: None that I can think of Disadvantages: Customer Services were appallingly unhelpful
This company is okay - as long as you don't have a problem. But the first time you run into any sort of trouble at all - you'll never want to use them again. The Customer Service staff are "long on courtesy, short on service". It's all very polite, but they can't do anything. They can't take decisions. They certainly can't arrange to fix or replace a broken car. They have a "best price guarantee" - which I tried to apply; but which, in the end, proved impossible for them to deal with - and it's their guarantee!
I've used them in Italy,. and everything went fine. Cheap, efficient, and I was very happy. But nothing went wrong. This time, in Spain, they proved completely incapable of sorting the slightest problem.
They don't use their own vehicles; and so you have to rely on their chosen "partners". Obviously, in Italy, they have ...

I recently went on a trip to Rome, my first trip in fact to Italy, I love culture and history so this city was a must on my list. Oh and it's the year of the 'I' - the year in which I visit countries beginning with I, so far I've been, Ireland, Iceland and now Italy.

The Clarin Hotel is a 2 star hotel situated in Via Palermo, a street central to the city centre although on the Eastern side, and approximately a 5 minute walk from Termini Station and a 10-12 minute walk to the Coliseum and many other attractions.
I would recommend getting the train from the airport (either of them) to Termini Station as the hotel is 2 roads away from the station, and as long as your case has wheels or bag isn't heavy you'll be fine walking it.

The old part of the city, built on a hill overlooking the port is very attractive and contains some fine eating places.
The old Sicilian capital of Palermo is one of the big cities of Italy, and as regards sightseeing interest, ranks below only Rome, Venice and Florence. Palermo is well known on the gastronomic map of Italy for pasta con sarde-spaghetti
