I have just returned from a skiing holiday in Pamporovo, Bulgaria. Where to begin, on entering Plovdiv Airport, the loos were something out of a trainspotting scene. Absolutely filthy, we boarded our ancient bus which drove (at death defying speed) up the mountain, swerving from one side of the road to another. Our hotel was clean but basic, not impressed considering it as a 4 star. Our first day on the slopes was a joke, rather than snow there was ice and slush to learn to ski in. Our instructor was bored and only taught us one hour before demanding to be paid. The chair lifts at the resort frequently broke down, and the slopes had no snow patrol to ensure safety of the skiiers. On our second day, there was no snow fall, so instead of starting on the Green beginers slope, we were led up the Blue intermediate slope by our guide. Not impressed. The food was beyond awful, mostly raw chunks of mysterious meat, covered with a vomit inducing sauce on everything. Most of the party I was with had stomach problems for the week. The locals were beyond rude, I asked one a question and he grunted and shoved me out of the way. The shopping! A FAKE PLASTIC Chloe INSPIRED bag was priced 200 levs, thats 100 euro. Bear in mind that the same bag was on sale in Dunnes Stores in Ireland for 15 euro! Taxis with a journey of 1 mile cost us 30 levs, more expensive than it would at home! Considering our driver asked why we needed our seat belts and drove at a frightening speed, I didnt justify the cost. This holiday was probably the worst one I have ever been on in my life, so my advice to anyone considering a skiing holiday, pay that little bit extra and you will avoid this hell hole on earth.
