The Pan Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur impresses you from the outset. As your taxi pulls into the hotel drive and the concierge opens the doors for you, you can't help but stare at the beautiful and tall building.
On entering the lobby area, you are greeted with subtle lighting and classical music playing at low volume. The lobby area was huge and you have to stand and work out where to go next! To the left was the performance stage area, to the right the lifts and lounge area and straight ahead, past the indoor trees and plants was the reception!
The check-in procedure went very smoothly and the staff at the reception were friendly and helpful. We booked our rooms from Trailfinders in Birmingham before we travelled and were confident that everything would run smoothly and hassle free.
Now for the details; the Pan Pacific in Kuala Lumpur consists of around 500 rooms. Each room has individual air conditioning, colour TV, mini-bar, tea making facilities, bath/shower, mini-safe, radio and alarm clock. Controls for devices such as lighting, radio and messages are situated conveniently at the bedside.
I was particularly impressed by the size of the bath room. On entering you find two giant sinks, with a mini-doorway entering into the toilet and large bath area. A third entrance takes you into a large shower room. Yes, a dedicated room for the shower! Very impressive!
Our room was on the 27th floor from which you get a nice view of 'The Mall' shopping centre and the local streets. The elevators are made of glass and were particularly superb at night when all lit up. The three restaurants (Malay, Chinese and Japanese) are situated on the lower floors along with the business and internet rooms.
For leisure, a large swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, massage services, sauna and jacuzzi and general gymnasium are available for most part of the day. Generally, the hotel provided all the services that you would expect from a 5-star chain. After requesting a newspaper on the first morning, I didn't have to ask again for the rest of the stay. They even let me keep the bathrobe from the room!
As I was sharing a twin room with a friend and due to the bargain prices of Trailfinders, we got our rooms for £17 each! Because of that, I find it very difficult to actually complain about anything! However, there is one complaint, and it probably explains the cheap cost of the hotel too; the hotel is too far from the inner city. So to go to all of the attractions in Kuala Lumpur, such as the Petrona Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur Tower and all of the humongous shopping centres, you have to get a cab. And that can add up to be quite a lot. Other than that, we had beautiful evenings in KL Pan Pacific!
