I saw The Pancake Bakery in a guide book, and decided that I'd have to go here as I'd never been to a restaurant that only sells pancakes before.
The restaurant is located on the Western side of Amsterdam in an area known as Gratchengordel West. It's on a road called "Prisengracht". It can easily be seen as the last of the parallel canals on the left hand side of a map of the city.
The Pancake Bakery ... ...couldn't find a piece of pancake without pineapple in. My partner decided to indulge herself, and she had what can only be described as an obscenely sweet pancake. It had 3 very large scoops of vanilla ice-cream, chocolate pieces, toffee pieces, and chocolate sauce. I have no idea how she even managed to eat as much as she did, but after saying "mmm I could eat loads of these" at the start, she definately seemed to have been proven wrong ... more

The Pancake Bakery is in the basement of an old converted boat house. The restaurant has been here for a long time, and it is firmly established as one of the best places to buy pancakes in Amsterdam. Care should definately be taken during wet weather, as the open steps down into the front porch way, appeared to get very wet. This was evident when a member of staff was trying to mop up some water from the entrance. However, it certainly doesn't detract from the restaurant and it was very full when we arrived.
The staff speak perfect English, so you feel very welcome straight away, although you can of course try and show off by speaking Dutch. I refrained as my minor knowledge of the language would probably have ended up in me saying something totally inappropriate without even realising!!
The choice of pancakes here is staggering. I don't think I've ever seen such a wide variety of food! They do starters, which are smaller pancakes with some very delicious savoury fillings, such as seafood or vegetarian choices.
The main course pancakes were huge!! I'd say they were well over 12" in diameter...and that's big! I had a bacon & pineapple pancake, and whilst being a little disappointed that the bacon only appeared in the centre, I was overjoyed that I literally couldn't find a piece of pancake without pineapple in. My partner decided to indulge herself, and she had what can only be described as an obscenely sweet pancake. It had 3 very large scoops of vanilla ice-cream, chocolate pieces, toffee pieces, and chocolate sauce. I have no idea how she even managed to eat as much as she did, but after saying "mmm I could eat loads of these" at the start, she definately seemed to have been proven wrong by the time she'd finished! Our main courses cost around 8 euros each, which for the size, proved excellent value for money!
They serve a large variety of drinks here too. From the obligatory soft drinks, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, to some of the heaviest pints of beer that I have ever lifted. The glasses were definately "man-sized" to say the least.
Overall, the experience in this restaurant was first class. I was very very impressed with the service received, and the location is fantastic. I'd recommend this restaurant to everybody travelling to Amsterdam, it was certainly very popular with families and tourists. Also, if you travel in the evening, I'd suggest a walk down the canals. The lighting around them is beautiful and very romantic ;)
Advantages: Giant portions, relaxed surroundings. Disadvantages: The laid back service!
We visited the Pancake Bakery, as it is known as "The most famous pancake house in Amsterdam". From the outside it doesn't look spectacular, but on entrance it was filled with many people, and was certainly very popular. The restaurant is open from 12 till 9.30.
The bakery is situated in an old 17th century warehouse, and is on the Prinsengracht Canal. It has been situated there since the 70's and has been owned by the same person for a good 25 ... ...pancakes, such as the German pancake filled with a hotpot and the Chillian pancake filled with chilli and spicy meat. I settled on a sweet one though, the Belgian with Apples, raisons, nuts. The International ones were about £8. The menu also contained a selection of childrens pancakes for about a fiver, decorated as animals, princesses, clowns etc. There were also a familiar choice of all soft and alcoholic drinks.
It took a while before we ordered, ...

'm a greedy pig) and the chunky ingredients. Me and the boyf both went for Mexican dishes, although there were plenty of different types of cuisine to choose from. I've heard that this restaurant can be booked to capacity, but on arriving earlyish (around 6) we had no trouble getting a table. Service was friendly, efficient, spot-on. I can?t say exactly how much it cost, but it was easily below the equivalent £10 a head (more than this I start to consider expensive).
It?s worth pointing out that there are plenty of vegetarian options in all Amsterdam eateries, it?s very easy to find good food at reasonable prices.
Another tourist must-do was the PancakeBakery, situated not far away on Prinsengracht 191. The day before we went there, I'd flatly refused to go in, as it was full of screaming children, looked horribly untidy and a bit like ...
