Pani's is a hidden treasure situated between Grey Street and Northumberland Street in High Bridge opposite the Bacchus pub. It's a genuine Italian cafe cum restaurant and bar, run and staffed by Italians with Italian cable TV and great food and beer. To quote the introduction on their excellent web site it is:
"The only truly genuine Italian Café going, where the waiters speak Italian, the coffee is as good as it gets in England and the food is fantastically…well, Italian."
They used to have a delicatessen attached but that has been integrated to make the place even bigger. Even so you often have to queue to get a table on Saturday lunchtime.
The web site is at:
http://www.pani.net
So you can check out all the menus and drinks available. On their lunchtime (10 am to 5pm) menu they do a selection of salads, ciabatta sandwiches, toasties and bruschette as well as some standard Italian hot dishes. I tend to go for the excellent "tonno e fagioli salad" that is made with tuna, cannellini beans, onions and salad.
Their evening (5pm to 10pm) menu consists of hot and cold appetisers and a wide range of mainly pasta and chicken dishes, again check out the web site for the complete range. It may change and it will be far more comprehensive than what can easily be included here.
The drinks menu contains a full range of wines, beers , hot drinks and soft drinks, so all tastes are catered for. The desserts are totally "to die for" Italian sweets, which I am supposed to avoid.
The web site also contains directions, phone numbers an email address.
I must apologise for the paucity of information in this op, as the web site is only a click away it's pointless me reiterating what they sell.
What the web sit doesn't tell you is that the place has an excellent atmosphere, with extremely friendly staff and is one of the best places to eat out in Newcastle at any time of the day. Whether you want a morning coffee, and evening meal, or a light lunch or a pre theatre meal (the close at 10pm) this place is absolutely perfect. Because of it's location you may have missed it, you now have no excuse.
