Pafos is where Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, is said to have risen from the waves that crash on its shores. This beautiful place has a charm of its own. During my visit to Cyprus, I had a far off (that is 200 metre distance) glimpse of Aphrodite's rock (Petra tou Romiou) where legend says the Goddess emerged from the sea. It is a massive chunk of stone that marks the spot, protuding out of the sea. Her birthplace was a place of pilgrimage for the entire Hellenic world (those days). There is still a ruined Temple dedicated to the Goddess quite close to where the rock is located. It is a reminder of ancient days when people worshipped the goddess. In the temple grounds, there is also a musuem where ancient relics have been found and displayed. Excavations have unearthed the spectacular 3rd -5th century-mosaics of the Houses of Dionysus, Orpheus, and Aion, and the Villa of Theseus — buried for sixteen centuries and yet remarkably intact.
