I spent ten days in Paphos at the beginning of January. I expected it to be warm but hot enough to get a tan. I was wrong. It was hot and sunny every day. Temperatures were around 73 fahrenheit for most of the day. It was a bit cooler at night.
The harbour, or old post of Paphos is a pleasant and relaxing place. Yoy can sit and watch the small boat in the harbour, or have a drink in one of the small cafes or bars. This is not a busy place.
If you want more bustle and typical resort type shops you will find these just a few hundred yards away. (There's a long line of them which I fear will turn into a mini Blackpool before long!) There is a branch of Woolworths here too but it was extremely expensive.
The town of Paphos itself, or Upper Paphos, (there are two towns called Paphos), was completely different. It was jammed with cars and trying to cross the narrow roads was somewhat dangerous. There is a large market here and I bout some gold jewellry and several pairs of shoes (Paphos is known for leather shoes). The prices for lacework were much lower here than in the lower town. Just a tip here: don't use the toilets at the market, you don't want to know why! Most cafes have clean toilets for the use of customers.
There is a Marks and Spencers Store in Paphos. It was very small and split into two levels. The clothes were very expensive (bare in mind that it's Cyprus pounds!) but they were different to what we get in UK.
There are lots of designer shops here too but these would prove too expensive for most of us to shop in. (Go down the hill from the market). You will also find a Co-op Store here (near the bottom of the hill). This Co-op is full of items produced in Cyprus, including foodstuffs. There is a very clean and very cheap cafe here too. A cheese and tomato sandwich (a full French stick) and a coffee cost CYP1.50
If you go up the hill from the market you get into the area where local people live. It is really a bit rough and dirty and gets worse as you go higher up. There are lots of little workshops on the side of the street but the dust and smell was a problem here.
There is lots of accomodation here and its available in all price ranges from self catering to five star hotel. All the little villages are connected to Paphos by a local bus service. It was very regular and cost just 50cents to anywhere.
The best beach here is Coral Bay. Its clean and there is a long stretch of golden sand. There are a couple of beach bars here and its readily accessible by bus. We were fortunate as we stayed at the Coral Beach Resort which has its own private beach but we still did a lot of exploring.
Paphos in general is a quiet place. I much prefer the port area where it was quiet, although I'm told that it gets overcrowded in season.

Yep. Paphos is great even in January. I was not too impressed by Coral bay beach though and it was a lot more expensive in Cyprus than I expected. Still I can guarantee you will have an excellent time if you go (probably!)

I went to Limassol in December, and was really surprised at how hot it was for that time of year. Great opinion - Thanks Donna.

Advantages: Friendly locals, plenty of historical sites, good range of bars and restaurants, exchange rate easy to work out Disadvantages: Can get very quiet in the off season, some prices are quite high, no sandy beaches

Review of Paphos (Cyprus)
Advantages: It is very friendly, drive on the Left hand side, and mostly speak English Disadvantages: You can't lay on the beaches in the winter, and the evenings are cold.
