It is no wonder whatsoever that Cyprus is the 'island of Aphrodite', the Goddess of Love, as I certainly left *my* heart behind.
I stayed in Paphos, in the residential part, and met many of the local people who are all so friendly and can't seem to do enough for you. Paphos is split into two parts, Old Paphos and New Paphos. New Paphos is where all the new nightclubs and bars seem to be opening up for the younger holidaymakers (like myself), however, I prefer a bit of culture in my holidays and so stayed in the old town.
Old Paphos is absolutely beautiful and verges on being described as 'immaculate.' Old Paphos boasts everything the perfect holiday should. There is a main road that runs through the town called 'Tomb of the Kings Road.' This is THE road to be on in the evening. It has many beautiful restaurants and bars with lots of fun entertainment
for all the family. The bars are told by the police to turn the music down by 12am, however if you want to continue the nightlife, the late night clubs are only a short taxi ride away.
The taxis in Old Paphos are all old Mercedes and BMW's which is quite amusing(!), however the taxi fares are EXTREMELY cheap and the drivers hilariously friendly and fun!! If the taxi drivers see you stood still for even an milli-second, they will beep at you and ask where you want to be taken to!!
The bars and restaurants are also cheap and extremely accomodating. The staff love to chat and make you laugh which really adds the fun to your holiday and gives you a wonderful sense of the Cypriot's culture.
Many people choose to hire mopeds or cars to get around in Paphos, which is also cheap and this gives you a wonderful opportunity to visit the wonderful sites nearby such as the Trudos Mountains. Many people hire open-top jeeps which are great for families or just for posing in!! These are more or less the same price as hiring a car and are much better in the hot weather as opposed to sitting in a hot sticky car. The mopeds are fun for teens and the younger ones, however the Cypriots tend to drive like maniacs, so this isn't advised if you do not have much confidence or experience on the roads. The reassuring thing however is that the Cypriots drive on the same side of the road as in the UK which makes life over there a LOT easier!!
There are many other sites which are a must-see if you are staying in Old Paphos. One of those being the infamous 'Tomb of the Kings'. This is where many kings were said to have been buried centuries ago and is a wonderful place to explore. It is also a reasonably cheap day out, roughly around a pound for adults and fifty pence for the kids. This is also a great place for photo opportunities if you want to appear all worldly and cultured!!
There is also a FANTASTIC sandy beach nearby. This is only a short bus or taxi ride away, both of which can be caught extremely easily (and cheaply!!) form the main road.
There are many watersports on the beach, such as paragliding, jet-skiing and banana boats. All of the sports can become quite costly if a few of your party want to do them but they are certainly worth the fun!! I personally recommend the banana-boats!! These are large inflatable boats, on which about ten people can sit on them in single file. The boat is pulled at fast speed by a speed boat and the idea is to hang on for your dear life!! Hilarious and unforgettable!! The beach also boasts many beautiful beach bars and restaurants with wonderful views. Although the beach is popular and extremely busy, it doesn't appear to be 'over-packed'.
There are also many trips to Egypt advertised on the main street from the island. This is DEFINITELY worth it if your holiday is for a fortnight, but not if it is any less as the Egypt trip takes up three days of your holiday. This is an amazing trip to take and feels as though you got two holidays in one. However, it costs. The trip works out at around eighty pounds per person and I certainly don't recommend the trip if you have children in your party. Egypt is far too hot for the children and they would get bored. There is also a lot of travelling involved and the locals pester you for money there which can be quite intimidating. That said, you needn't leave Cyprus as everything you could possibly want is right there on your doorstep.
This is a wonderful place for a holiday. It is beautifully clean and the crime rate there is apparently only 1% and allegedly that is done by the tourists(!), so this is a really, lovely safe place, most ideally for families and couples. It has all the benefits of a five star holiday AND a budget holiday all rolled into one.
I always say that I will never visit the same place twice but this is one place that I will almost certainly visit time and time again and I won't have to break the bank in order to do so.

Advantages: It is very friendly, drive on the Left hand side, and mostly speak English Disadvantages: You can't lay on the beaches in the winter, and the evenings are cold.
