Gulp! I thought we had wandered into a Grey Big Belly convention by mistake. I felt so inadequate. I tried expanding my tummy as I sat down but, no matter what I did, it seemed nothing in comparison to the gentleman sitting next to me. He had on a tight blue vest emblazoned with the words 'U.S. Athletics' that showed off his wobbly expanse to perfection. This was further enhanced by baggy white shorts and matching legs that tapered tantalisingly into grey socks and sandals.

As I looked around at the dozen unsmiling faces in walked the holiday rep all blonde, blue eyed and suntanned. I mean - so artificial - obviously out of a bottle (miaow!) She started by telling us she had been a Butlin's Red Coat and I could feel BF cringe with horror. I knew it was a mistake to have come to this introductory meeting at our holiday hotel.

I felt that the meeting was a waste of time. All these holiday reps really want to do is sell their vastly overpriced excursions. I got more useful information by chatting to the hotel receptionist (e.g. a trip to Limassol in a shared stretch Mercedes taxi for just £2 each, car hire £15 per day etc)

So this was Paphos in Cyprus. First thoughts? Not too impressed.

Our hotel wasn't in a prime position to say the least. From the balcony I could gaze at houses, unfinished buildings and what can only be described as scrubland - no doubt also waiting to be developed. In fairness the hotel (Paphiessa) was adequate - nice and clean and well decorated. Like a lot of things though, position is important.

But was I down hearted? No way! I changed into my bikini top, thong and short wrap around skirt, plonked my sunnies on my nose and headed in the general direction of the seafront while clasping BF's hand in an act of togetherness - ahhh! We passed empty shops, bars now extinct, litter, unmade roads and more scrubland. Fifteen minutes later we reached our first sight of the sea.

Now this was better - thankfully. In fact it was quite pleasant. Running along by the sea was a wide promenade that stretched the full sweep of the harbour and led to the port. On the opposite side of the road were shops and restaurants with pavement style tables. Yes this was definitely much better. The sun was shining, there was blue sky and I was getting switched on.

But where was the beach? Oh dear! We found just a few narrow stoney strips to the east of the harbour which were very poor. We kept on walking along a path by the sea and eventually (about twenty minutes later) reached a small sandy stretch (opposite the Aloe Hotel) which was sort of OK. There were sunbeds and sun umbrellas for hire, all at £1 each.

I got my kit off (except for the thong) and lay in the sun after drenching myself in sun oil. Great! I had a swim, walked along the beach to dry off and felt that, at last, I was really on holiday. Even BF was looking relaxed and kind of cute. (Note: The sea can be rough around Paphos, swim in designated areas only, look out for warning flags).

Who should come along but Mr.Big Belly himself in a changed strip. He now had a T-shirt saying, 'Sex is like snow. You never know how many inches you will get or how long it will last'. I had a chat with Mr.B.B much to BF's annoyance. "How could you talk to someone", he said, "when you're virtually naked?" Strange, but my mouth still works even if my boobs and bottom are uncovered!

In the evening we headed to the port and sat in a bar where I had my first holiday Orgasm while the sun changed to a deep red and sank into the sea. Yes, the Orgasm was a cocktail! I only chose that one to see BF's expression when he ordered it, "A large beer and an Orgasm please". We wandered along the port a litle further and sat outside another bar. This time I had a cocktail called Foreplay. I was beginning to have fun, Paphos wasn't so bad after all!

Paphos has been around for ages and is full of history. It was the Roman capital of Cyprus and is on the west coast. It is divided into two definite sections: Upper (Pano) Paphos and Lower (Kato) Paphos. Buses (nos. 10 & 11) link the two parts.

Actually the buses are very efficient. They run every fifteen minutes and there is a local set fare of 50 cents (55p). BF and I got to know them quite well. There is also a number 15 which runs to Coral Bay (about 11 km distance) where there is an extensive sandy beach and water sports, again only costs 50 cents. Buses also run to Ayia Napa and Protaras but the fare is dearer because of the much longer distances.

Upper Paphos has a daily market with fresh vegetables and fruit plus lots of lace, leather, pottery and souvenirs. This part of the town I didn't find that special. There are narrow streets and the such but it didn't capture my imagination.

Lower Paphos is the main tourist area where most of the hotels are situated. The area around the harbour and port gets busy in the evenings with lots of people walking up and down, sitting in restaurants and watching the sunsets. It's an area for couples and families. You feel safe and comfortable and it's lovely and relaxing.

This is also where there is a multitude of places to eat which include typical Cypriot establishments such as Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Pizza Express, Fish'n'Chips and even a Woolworth's restaurant (yes, that one).

The food generally was OK but me, being a veggie, didn't have a lot of choice. In a normal type restaurant a three course set meal can be as little £5.50 but the portions aren't over large and vegetables are limited. A good way to get a flavour of the real local food is to order a Meze which is up to twenty different dishes from dips and salads to moussaka, kebabs, fish and squid. Not for me but BF enjoyed trying the different meat and fish dishes.

The local beer, Keo, is £1 a pint and I can recommend the local wines from about £4 a bottle in a restaurant or you can pick up a reasonable bottle in a supermarket for as little as £1.50 (main producers Sodap, Keo and Etko). Cans of beer range from 40p each in Woolworths (the cheapest place) to 80p for the same cans in other supermarkets. It pays to shop around, if you can be bothered. There is also Zivania, a local drink 100% proof - firewater!

In lots of ways Paphos still has remnants of British 'rule' (1878 to 1960). The traffic drives on the left just like us, the electricity plugs are the same as ours and the pedestrian crossings still have old fashioned Belisha beacons. Virtually everyone seems to speak English so I didn't need the phrases I'd picked out, "Kalispera sas kyrie. Ti inae afto?" (Good evening, sir. What is this?). Even the currency is called pounds, though a Cypriot pound is worth £1.10 at present.

What I remember about Paphos is the sunshine (up to 35C / 95F), swimming, the harbour and port with it's Byzantine Castle and all of the historical sights. I'm a ruins junkie and there were lots to indulge myself with, all within walking distance. The Tombs of the Kings (2nd Century burial chambers carved from solid rock), House of Dionysos (with amazing preserved mosaic floors depicting scenes from Greek mythology), Catacomb of St. Solomoni (underground caves and a tree where you can hang your handkerchief to cure any diseases or ailments), City Walls, Villa of Theseus (more 3rd Century floor mosaics) and lots more! I loved it. It bored BF to bits so I often went on my own.

Night life? There are a few clubs, discos, music and topless bars all tucked together behind the main front to the east of the harbour. Some activity here, especially at the weekends when all of the Cypriot boys and girls come out to play. Not quite Ayia Napa - but you wouldn't really go to Paphos if that is what you are looking for.

After a disappointing beginning we had a memorable holiday. If our hotel had of been one on the seafront (Posidon St) I think we'd have loved it from the start. And as for my first holiday orgasm! I remember it well. Cocktail? What are you on about!

Fantastic Review, very accurate! I was in Paphos not 2 months ago and and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Made me aware of a few extra places I will have to visit next time as well!!

Excellent OP, I've spent many enjoyable holidays there, possibly because my mother in law lives there and I get the holiday cheap!

Did you have your orgasm during 'Happy Hour'? (Usually between 6pm and 7pm). You could then have had two for the price of one!!
