Originally I'm from Cyprus and I am very proud of that. I feel very lucky because I lived there most the years of my life. (in Paphos, in a village that is called Armou that is on a hill and from up there you can see nice view and all paphos town and the sea!)
Paphos have everything you need to take your holidays (if you are seeknig to have a holiday somewhere in Europe) and it's also very good place so stay (if you are planning to move in Cyp forever!)
The weather is wonderful, especially during the summer, the sun, the beach everything! You can enjoy your night in Kato Paphos visiting a variety or taverns, restaurants, the castle, clubs, bars, cafes and meet new people.
The hotels are all very nice with good prices. But if you are considering to move in Cyprus-Paphos, you will find it a bit expensive to get a house and start your life there, but when starting you will notice that you won't have to pay all those taxes and money you pay in UK.
Most of the things are very cheap compareing to UK.
Paphos is a place you should have your holidays! Not to mention all the history that's very interesting and many places you can go and see! Don't think about it, because it will be a wonderful experience in your lifetime. paphos!
The city also has many connections to and relics from early Christianity. The city has become a popular seaside resort with a population of 39,500. The Ktima section of the city is the main residential area, while Kato Paphos is the playground of holidaymakers, built around the medieval port with its numerous luxury hotels, tavernas and entertainment venues.
Places to visit: ------------------- Tombs of the Kings, The Mosaics of Paphos , Catacombs, Acropolis, Baths of Aphrodite. Kato Paphos: Castle, Odeon House of Dionysus
What to eat ---------------- Don't leave Cyprus without triying the pitta souvlaki!! Visit Kato Paphos and go to the good seafood restaurants near the ancient fishing port. The area smells fish! It's so nice to eat FRESH fish!
Paphos is a very cultural area, and there is plenty to see and do, including impressive old ruins and many cultural heritage sites of interest. Nice greek food that you will never forget. If you haven't been in Paphos you should go.

Have you ever been to Malta? Its smaller than Cyprus. In 3/4 of an hour maximum you will travel from side to side of the island! The way you described Cyprus is very similar to Malta and many English people like to come here. Great culture, lovely weather and lots of feasts and fireworks in Summer.
Hope to see you around

Advantages: It is very friendly, drive on the Left hand side, and mostly speak English Disadvantages: You can't lay on the beaches in the winter, and the evenings are cold.
