We visited Paphos in June 2007. The ride from the airport was somewhat alarming as a). the taxis do not appear to observe any rules of the road and b). the landscape looked more like a scorched battefield in Iraq than a holiday centre but upon arriving at our hotel (The Avanti) we were pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the hotel and the greenery of the surroundings. The weather whilst we were there was unbelievably hot, over 40 degrees most days with unbroken sunshine. The beach at nearby Coral Bay (Don't bother with the beaches at Paphos - they are awful) was very nive with unbelievably warm sea - even in June. The local bus service is excellent.
Paphos, I am afraid is a bit of a dump. It caters soleley for the "chav" end of the market and if you want somewhere like Blackpool but hotter then it is for you. The endless succession of Fish and Chip Restaurants, Burger Bars etc and the tacky goods on sale were a real turn-off. The locals were, with a few exceptions, quite rude, and it was impossible to stand outside a restaurant to view the menu without being harangued by the owner to come in "you no like the food - you no pay".
There are some nice Cypriot restaurants but you have to hunt them out. We found one which was out of this world but I am not going to name it here - at the request of the owner - who wants to keep out the "riff-raff" (his words - not mine).
Go into the surrounding hills and villages if you really want to seeCyprus. Paphos is far too British for us.
Oh dear that doesn't sound very promising - we hate that sort of resort and we're off to Paphos next month! Can you "whisper" the name of the nice restaurant in my guestbook by any chance? I'd be most grateful, and I promise I'm not "riff raff"! Lexy
Some more information on sight s you went to etc.. would have given you a higher rating - i went to Larnaca back in 2002 greatt ime more non-tourist - lynsey
