We have visited Paphos a number of times and each time, we enjoy it more.
The country itself is easy quite beatiful, it is easy tour , it has excellent roads, and the Cypriot people are warm and friendly.
As a bonus for us unilingual folk, 90% or more Cypriots speak excellent English but is also fun to use your Greek phrase book !!!
Spring or the Autumn are our favourite times as the temperatures are moderated but even in the Summer months, it is a dry heat and there are the occasional cooling sea breezes.
We stay in a self catering apartment which is in the village of Tala with wonderful 180 degree views down to the Mediterranean and the Paphos coast.
There is nothing nicer than to get up in the morning, sit on the verandah and look-out at the view while you sip fresh orange juice or freshly brewed coffee.
Tala is not an isolated village. It is an up-market residential area of Paphos with villa's and well designed, low rise apartments.
It is a 10 minute drive down to Paphos harbour with its many historical sites, shops and restaurants, To supermarkets etc is an even shorter drive.
If you like golf, then there are three international golf courses within easy reach. Tsada is an easy 15 minute drive away and the other two, not more than 30 minutes.
There is speedy access to the coast road as well as to the motorway connecting Paphos to its international airport and to Limassol, Larnaca and roads into the Troodos Mountains.
Tala is in the hills and due to this, the temperature is quite afew degrees cooler than at sea level. However, for comfort, make sure that any accomodation that you rent is fully airconditioned.
It does get quite cool in the Winter months ( December through March) so also make sure that the accomodation has some type of heating. Two years ago we visited at the end of February and although the days were sunny and warm, when the sun went dowwn it got quite chilly. The apartment we rented had dual cooling/heating units so we were fine.
The views from Tala are stunning as you look down to the Med and along the Paphos coast. Because of the elevation, make sure that any apartment or other accomodation you rent has a large verandah and unobstructed views so that you can enjoy the vista and the sea breezes. The village square has some decent restaurants and taverna's and two small shops.
You do need a car to experience the Paphos region and Cyprus at its best.
There is a local bus service (ALEPA, Tel # 26.934410) which has a frequent weekday bus service from Tala to Paphos plus from Paphos it also goes to Polis, Coral Bay and other places of interest.
A very short drive away from Tala is the beautiful monastery of St. Neophytos. This is well worth a visit not only for the orthodox church but also for the hermit caves with their ancient painted frescoes. There is a small charge to view the caves and the museum but not for the church or the grounds. There is also a small cafe which serves drinks and light snacks/food and the obligatory well stocked and tasteful gift shop.
Tala has been a great base for us to tour the Ppahos region as well as visiting the east coast towns such as Limassol, Larnaca and all of the interesting archaelogical, historical and natural sitesin between.
We really enjoy Paphos and Cyprus and we hope that you will to.

I cannot think of anything to say against Cyprus, it really is a beautiful island. You cannot beat the sea food at Paphos, its divine! Wish I wasn't going to Tenerife now.

Advantages: It is very friendly, drive on the Left hand side, and mostly speak English Disadvantages: You can't lay on the beaches in the winter, and the evenings are cold.
