...The only other major cities I've been to are Paris and London but New York easily has them both beat. Staying in the Manhattan area which is definitely the ideal place to stay if you can afford it, I was worried that such a big, busy city may seem impersonal, but in reality the small shops on every street, particularly the lovely delis where we bought breakfast every morning, gave the place a feeling of community that I wouldn't have imagined. The sights pretty much speak for themselves, although the view from the top of the empire state building has to be seen to be believed, but what really impressed me was the way that standing in the street, or even looking out the hotel window, you could feel like you were in the centre of the world. So many landmarks from films and tv, on one corner they were filming an advert, another was cordened...

...I flew Air France in summer 1999 from Oslo to New York (and return)changing aeroplanes at Charles de Gaulle.
I was impressed with the service offered. The food was good and I like the fact that they present you with a little menu instead of just telling you your options verbally. Also free headsets and 'eye-shades' for those who wanted to sleep were welcome extras.
However, my journey was plagued by delays . . . was delayed for over an hour in Paris on my outward journey. However, much time was made up in the air and the arrival to New York was not too delayed.
The return to Paris from New York was also delayed and because the scheduling for my return flight to Oslo was so 'tight', I almost missed this connection. Even after I had managed to make the connecting flight I was told that there was no guarantee that my luggage had made it...

Advantages: One of the most beautiful cities in the world! Disadvantages: people often find Parisians unfriendly
...This is my favourite city in the whole world (although New York comes very close!)
Paris really is everything you dreamed of.........stroll along the Champs Elysees at sunset and breathe in the atmosphere........see the sun set beind the Arc de Triomphe......it's picture postcard stuff, but here you are - living it!
If you are a first time visitor to Paris, make sure you see the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe and Sacre Coeur. The Metro system is excellent, and this really is all doable even just in one day, if that is all you have.
Of course Paris will take up as many days as you have to offer her....... she truly is the most beautiful and atmospheric city in the world.
When I lived in Paris, the highlights I kept going back to were Notre Dame (but for an awe inspiring organ recital, go check out St Sulpice!) Sacre...

If you want to stay in Central New York then this is the hotel to book. It is actually IN Times Square! It's a huge modern hotel with over 45 floors so some of the views are great. There is a bar at the top which is a lovely place to have a drink,... more
The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the... more
Postmodernism, eh? It's a funny old bag of fish. Even the holier-than-thou critics don't quite seem to know what it's all about. They argue whether it's
a) a revolt against modernism,
b) a progression of modernism,
c) both of these and more
or d) more
