Worth the money?
Advantages: Reasonably central, fair pricing, very clean Disadvantages: smallish rooms
...in 1999, staying in the Libertel Elysse Sablon.
The (double) room was not huge, with ensuite. The hotel was very clean and staff friendly, even when we arrived 5 hours late due to delays at Heathrow.
Breakfast was traditional continental style, with good selection of fresh breads.
It was reasonably central, being about 20 minutes stroll from either l'arc de Triomphe or Eiffel Tower.
In the close locale there are a reasonable number of small bistros ... ...5-10 mins to the nearest metro stop.
Overall the value was fair for Paris, as it was reasonably central. A larger room would have been nice, but lets face it - there's so much to do in Paris you're not going to be sitting in your hotel room watching the TV! ...

Good little base - Hotel Perfect
Advantages: cheap, good breakfast, central location Disadvantages: very basic
...mini break away. The hotel was cheap, but perfectly adequate as a little base to explore the city from. It's near Sacre Coeur, and a little walk from the metro stop, so it's not bad to get anywhere from here - eg La Defense, Champs Elysee for shopping, Notre Dame, Eifel Tower, Louvre etc as where ever you stay you have to travel to get round all the touristy places.
The rooms are small and very basic, but we had our own bathroom and it was clean.
... ...English when we got stuck with our A level French) and the breakfast was great. Very French - coffee or hot chocolate, baguette, jams etc and a fruity yoghurt so we were well fed for the days ahead.
I've went to Paris 5 times in 3/4 years, and to be honest I'd rather stay here again to save some pennies and have more to spend around the city.
It doesn't have to be expensive when you're there - stay away from some of the more touristy places and ...

A 3* hotel at 2* price!
Advantages: Clean, comfortable and friendly Disadvantages: Not central to the Left Bank (but great for 'Grand Boulevards' and Montmartre etc)
Arriving in Paris last weekend we found that the hotel we booked from the UK was little more than a doss house so we left on our high horses only to find that we were homeless in Paris on a Friday afternoon! IÕd brought a TIME OUT guide, that had been given away free a few weeks before, with me and desperately rang round places featured (buy a phone card from any Tabac if you need to use the phone - the minimum is £5 but virtually all call boxes ... ...a room for FF850 (£85) per night but, if you mention the TIME OUT offer, it comes down to FF680 (£68) per night. When we actually got there we were shown another room as well for FF560 (£56) - it was small but very clean and comfortable and only £11 per night more than the flea pit!
The staff were really helpful and breakfast is great; usual fresh bread and fabulous French butter, warm croissant and pan au chocolat, cereal, fruit, cheese, endless ...

Arty Des Arts!
Advantages: Original building, nice and clean and decent rooms Disadvantages: Could have quirkier rooms to match the rest of the hotel.
...too from the trip! This hotel is one of the ones I had not really heard much about so didn't really have any prior opinions of it or know what to expect before arriving.
The hotel:
The hotel is a 3 star hotel that is quite traditional in terms of the style of the building. The hotel is fairly small with 50 rooms along with a small breakfast room and a small lobby lounge.
Location:
The hotel is located in the Montmartre area of Paris at 5 Rue ... ...of character. The street the hotel is on is slightly sloped and even though the road at the bottom is quite busy this particular one isn't so location is pretty good for being away from the busy road but, still within a very short walk of where all the amenities are.
An interesting fact is the area that the hotel is located in was used in the film 'Amelie'.
First impressions:
Well when we turned up the driver couldn't get right up to the hotel ...

Could do better
Advantages: Very close to the Louvre and assorted sights Disadvantages: Small, functional, no character
If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Paris that will put you within an easy stroll of the Louvre and its attendant delights, you might be tempted by the Hotel des Victoires. It's in the Rue Herold, handy for the Metro and also very close to the exquisite Galerie Vivienne, the Bourse (the French Stock Exchange)and the assorted resturants of Les Halles. So, pretty central then - the only problem is that you can almost certainly do better. There's ... ...spruce and clean, has a lift (essential for these tall, thin Paris buildings), and rooms have TV, minibar and phones, and the staff are exceptionally pleasant (most speak good English). But it's going to cost you something like £35 per person per night excluding breakfast - and when it comes to morning sustenance, you're much better off nipping round the corner for a cafe complet at one of the many nearby restaurants. For your money you'll get a ...
