Paris is a nice place, but I definately think its over rated. It can be a bit expensive to do things like eat out, and it depends whereabout you are in Paris as to whats around.

My boyfriend and I travelled to Paris with British Airways. Not many people went to Paris when we did (July 12-15th), and we had a spare seat next to us. The plane was small, but comfortable, and the flight just over an hour.

I had researched the metro and train system in Paris, so I new where to go from Charles de Gaulle airport, to our hotel. So, we joined a massive queue to get a train ticket. Now, I had read that the train ticket you could buy from the airport could also work on the metro system. I didn't know if it was true, but the ticket didn't cost much, so I was prepared to buy another one at the metro station.

We arrived after a very long train journey (about 50 minutes!) to the Gare du Nord. We had only just got off the escalator when this guy came over to us, asking if we were British tourists. I just wanted to get going and find the platform, but he asked us where we were going and wanted to see our tickets. So my boyfriend showed the guy his, and this guy told us that the ticket wouldn't get us onto the metro and that we'd need to buy a new one. So, fair enough, he took us to a machine that you could buy tickets from. I stayed with our bags, and my boyfriend went with him.

When he came back, my boyfriend said that this guy had paid for us to have two 3 day metro tickets, to use as much as we wanted. And that he'd paid for it on his card, and that my boyfriend had given him the money in cash (and a little extra for being so helpful.)

I wasn't sure if it was entirely a good idea from the beginning, but again, this man wanted to show us where the platform was. After having done that, we went on the metro and got to the hotel. However, the next day, we went to use the metro and get off the train when our tickets wouldn't let us out of the station. One of the staff let us out and checked our tickets. One look at them and he said they had expired - the day after we'd bought them from the guy at Gare du Nord.

My boyfriend explained the situation to him, and the station man said that we had been conned. Tickets didn't cost that much and didn't look like the ones we had. We had lost about €60 on our first day.

The second time we got 'conned' was when we were using the subway, underneath the Arc de Triomphe. A woman came over to us with string in her hand and told us to put our index fingers out. Next thing we knew, she had started talking to us and was french plaiting a bracelet out of this string, telling us some story about what to do with it. Then, she tied the bracelets on, and charged us €10 each for them. I couldn't believe it! SHE had approached us and practically ambushed us. We had to pay otherwise we'd never have got away.

A bit about the hotel then: I was in a 4* Quality Hotel, right next to a Chinese Takeaway place, which was very very handy, and very nice! I was in the 17th arrondisement, so I was quite close to the Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysses, Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre. It was a 4 story hotel, tucked away behind some houses. The hotel itself had a restaurant, which only served breakfast, a bar, and a very small beer garden at the back. The lobby was very nicely decorated and furnished. The staff were polite and friendly, but got embarassed if they didn't understand a word you said to them. For example, I asked if there were any shops nearby. (I fancied a chocolate bar.) And he didn't quite understand what i was saying. He disappeared into his room on the ground floor and then produced a load of chocolate cake, crisps and other snacks. I then tried to explain again what I meant, which he understood this time and got very embarrased. A few minutes later, he brought out 2 slices of chocolate cake and apologised for misunderstanding me. I was the one who felt embarrased! I'm really not very strong at french so tried my best in simple english instead......

The only major problem with Paris is getting around. My boyfriend got lost looking for plasters and there's a million and one pharmacies, which is useful, but then, you can't tell the streets apart. Which is where it gets repetetive. However, there are plenty of metro stations. Normally one at the end of each main road! So actually getting around Paris itself isn't too bad. Just trying to work out where you are is difficult.

We went on 12th-15th July, so we were in Paris around Bastille Day, one of their national holidays. There was a considerable amount of military personnel walking down the Champs-Elysses that day, and a few people were having their own private celebrations, but as far as we could see, there was no major celebration for it, and nothing really advertised.

For places to eat, its quite good. There's lots of restaurants to choose from. Just expect them to be a bit pricy. I went to a couple of chinese restaurants, which were just like your typical chinese restaurant, and the staff were polite. So all in all, the food was good, and location of restaurants to the hotel were also very pleasing.

Something to be careful of: If you do decide to go to Paris in the summer, it gets very hot, and there isn't much in the way of shade. Get creamed up and wear a cap is my advice. I even wore trousers to stop my legs from burning! We had to keep taking breaks every so often in any shade we could find, having a drink and some icrecream to try and stay cool and hydrated.

Also, if you decide to go for a walk somewhere, make sure you've been to the toilet before you go - I spent 5 hours looking for a toilet. The walk amounted to 8 hours and an awful lot of miles. We'd practically walked from one side of Paris to the other! And not a single toilet was around in all that time.

Something I'd recommend doing before you go - book an air shuttle. They don't cost a lot, but it saves the hassle of getting a train, and you don't get conned. We booked one for the way back at around €19, and we got to the airport in a silly 20 minutes. Because of the train journey to the hotel, we thought it was a good 2 hours to the airport. NOT THE CASE. We were 3 hours early for our flight, and our check in desk hadn't even opened yet.

Paris is one of those places you do have to visit, because you just do. Like New York or Sydney. It didn't cost us a lot to get there. £187 per person for 4 nights in a 4 star hotel from Lastminute.com. Was an absolute bargain!!

And as for the flight back, we were practically flying in a double decker bus - by that, i mean it was no longer or wider than one. The seats were 2-1. Not your normal 3-3.

A bit more on at least a couple of Paris's tourist attractions would have been helpful given the subject, this is more a review of getting to the city and some good general tips. A very good warning about the cons though, they are rife there and sorry to hear you were a victim. I visited a year and a half ago and we were also approached several times, far worse than anywhere else I've been. Glad you still enjoyed it overall :-) Steff

HI there, a nice review. I'd have liked to have read a bit more about the vast variety of attractions and restaurants and activities that Paris has to offer though. I appreciated the importance of relaying your experiences to us over being conned but note this is common in tourist traps around the world and should have been an extra to your review rather than what felt like the main focus. I hope you don't feel I'm being over-critical, I just like to offer constructive criticism and explain why I've rated a review as I have done when I don't feel it's brilliant. It is good though and I think you got the right length - it's just I felt you "filled" a bit. Best wishes, Elle x.
