Ok, so firstly a little about this place to set the scene…

Park Lodge Guest House is situated in Hull, East Yorkshire, just off one of the main roads running from the town centre. It gets it name from the large park next door, which is a great place and I will talk about it in a bit.

It has been operating as a guest house for about 20 years, but just over 1 year ago it was down-sized. It used to have 11 guest bedrooms, and was comprised of two large houses and a smaller building, but the other main house was sold, and the smaller building converted.

The people who run the show are Malcolm Purcell, the proprietor, and his partner Marie Moverley. Also I help out on the weekends, and am usually the person called if something goes wrong, (they aren't very hands on). As far as qualifications go I am not a handy man, but I might as well be.

There are basic facilities that can be used, such as the utility room, with washers and dryers; there are also irons to take to your room. Other obvious things are kettles and cutlery, which can be used at will, and also a microwave and space for things in the fridges and freezers.

The exterior of the building is covered in ivy, as is the wall separating the grounds for the park. There is a long drive with space for 6-7 cars, which is handy as the roads parking can get full. The drive is newly concreted and smooth, as Marie is also a keen gardener, despite the lack of garden, and the place looks lovely with a large array of hanging baskets and shrubs.

THE LOCATION…

Ok, so as I said it is in the not so charming city of Hull. Hull actually has quite a lot to offer, besides the high risk of getting stabbed. There is a thriving night life, and lots of other family attractions. It is also home to "The Deep".

And for those very die-hard fans, there is the cities football club, who after a bad run (of 20 years or so), got promoted 2 years in a row and are now sitting comfortably in the (bottom of the), championship.

I have been there a few times, and am off again with college in a few weeks and it is ace, great fun for all the family.

It is also only a short trip to the industrial sector, which includes BP and Salt End. It is because of this the majority of the guests are long term, and are working at BP. There also guests who are staying for other reasons such as contracts for building contracts.

Soo, as I said, it is next to East Park. Now this really is a great place, and it has just undergone massive refurbishment after a lot of investment. There are fields for different sports, play areas for all ages, and the most recent refurbishment, on top of the existing animal enclosure, there is a new massive one. This has loads of new animals and even a giant bird house, which you can walk through. There is also a big lake, which you can fish in, although experience has told me there isn't that many fish.
Years ago there was a splash boat, which has been done up, and is great during summer. There are also peddalos and swan boats. There are even large rowing boats which are good.

Being just off the main road, busses are frequent and there is a stop outside. The buildings windows are double glazed, but you can sometimes get a slight rumbling when a double-decker passes.

There are a fair few take-aways nearby. There is a nice Indian and a nice Turkish place at the top of the street, and a fish and chip shop at the other end. There is also a Chinese across the way. Just across the road there is corner shop, which is nice and convenient.

THE BUILDING…

Hmm, yer, so as I said, there are 6 rooms. There are single rooms, double rooms, and twin rooms. The prices are based upon how many people are in a room, not how many people can fit in the room.

Also, as previously mentioned the building is covered in thick ivy, which looks good, but is a right bugger to cut! You wouldn't believe how long it takes to strim, bag and take to the tip. We usually just lend a van from a friend. It grows like wildfire, so in the summer you need to keep on top of it, but as I said it looks very nice, and makes the building look older. The only thing making it look modern is the conservatory.

The hanging baskets, which are tended Marie, have won the local commercial competition Hull in Bloom several times. They always look wonderful and are Maries pride and joy.

The conservatory is next to the living room, and is the dining area. There are 2 tables, which easily seat everybody, and are very nice to eat in at any time, especially in the summer.

There is an outside washroom, with two washing machines, and two dryers.
One of the dryers is actually a very expensive top of the range one, which was given to us as a gift by some Japanese engineers who stayed a while ago, as they are rich, and really liked it there. It is actually quite strange, they had loads of money and could have easily stayed at the Royal Station Hotel, but they choose to come here ever year when they come over to dismantle the large BP generators. Great chaps they are.

THE ROOMS…

All rooms have a colour TV and central heating. They are not en-suite, but there are 3 bathrooms and toilets, which have power showers and towels, the usual stuff.
As you would expect, the bed linen is changed daily, and the rooms are cleaned daily as well. There is also full room cleanout every week in which all the furniture comes out and they are scrubbed thoroughly, including carpet shampooing etc.

WHAT YOU GET…

Ok, well firstly when you stay at a guest house, all you really need are clean lodgings and food, so that's what you get. Inclusive in the price (£18 per person), you get a bed, and a Full English Breakfast. You also have accessibility to the other facilities.
Instead of full English, you can opt for cereal, or even toast. Also for the busy man, you can order a hot or cold sandwich to go, for no extra cost.

Breakfast is served from very early, as some contactors are up and left by 6am (how they do it I don't know). You can also get a wake up call; just remind them 5 minutes before you need to be up, only joking.

What more could you want?

OTHER FACILITIES…

Well as previously mentioned, on top of the necessities there is space in the fridges and freezers for food. Some people prefer to stock up on microwave meals, or pot noodles as opposed to eating out. Also and food can be self prepared in the kitchen, don't be shy.

There are ovens and grills, and of course stoves. Plus the trusty old microwave and kettles. Also feel free to use the toaster; just bring your own bread! Only joking.

Yeah so there you go. One more thing; as most of the residents are long term, bookings cannot always be made long in advance. Loyalty lies with the long term residents and priority is given, but they will try their best to accommodate you. If they cannot recommendations will be given to other suitable places. :D
