I stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel in Leeds in August 2006 simply for one night, as a little luxury and a change of scenery. We chose the Park Plaza as it was quite affordable for the little bit of luxury that it offers in comparison to other hotels in Leeds.
The hotel is located on Boar Lane in Leeds which is simply across the road from the train station, so its location is great for commuters or people on an overnight stay in Leeds, as it is also down the road from the bus station and there is also a bus stop at the train station that goes all the way to Leeds Bradford Airport.
The hotel is about 20 storeys high, located over the "Manias" - Wokmania, Spicemania and Pizzamania, as well as bar Scene and Chino Latino which are attached to the hotel and I assume part of its amenities. It's a very modern block and we stayed their in hope of getting a high hotel room so we could see the view of Leeds.
We were not at all disappointed. We arrived at the hotel at about 9-10pm and the only let down about the appearance of the hotel is the entrance. As I pointed out, there are a few restaurants and bars downstairs so the only entrance to the hotel is up a side alley, almost a goods entrance for the Leeds Shopping Plaza next door, This can be overlooked as it is simply only the entrance, they have done the best they can do with the location they have.
Reception staff were friendly, the reception is very snazzy, with a The Sims inspired disco floor as a wall behind the reception. It is a very minimalistic establishment with lots of white, clean sharp surfaces.
We stayed in an executive room on the 18th floor and this cost us about £100 for the night. The executive rooms are located on the corners of the floors to give more space. I assume the smaller rooms are located in between the corner rooms. Their are 2 lifts to take you up to whichever floor you are on and they are very speedy.
When we entered our room the view amazed us, living in Leeds previously I couldn't believe it actually was that beautiful at night, the lights of the city were not too strong, just enough to genuinely make it magical!
The room itself was extremely clean, again alot of white and black, with a black and white pinstripe quilt cover. It wasn't amazingly big, I expected it to be bigger, and if I was to go back I definitely wouldn't go for a standard room, I can't imagine how small they would be! There was a TV, a minibar, desk space, bedside tables and also the ensuite bathroom. All very clean and well maintained, the bathroom was top of the line and pristine, looked like it had never been used!
The windows are massive in the rooms so you can take advantage of the beautiful view, obviously better at night than during the day, but the curtains are great so this doesn't affect your sleep - a vital part of comfort at a hotel!
The room service menu wasn't amazingly equisite, yet quite pricey, as you would expect most hotels of this quality to be, along with the minibar. I should note we did receive 2 free (individual-sized) bottles of wine and obviously some little toiletries from the bathroom, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, a sewing kit, hand/body lotion - definitely quite cute!
We had no complaints about our stay at the hotel, it was very peaceful, both the surroundings and the atmosphere - and it is worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre outside. We had a slight problem with the TV in our room which was fixed immediately by the reception staff when we rang them.
Overall, a hotel well worth visiting (but I wouldn't book a standard, could be claustrophobic!), but if you're not really up for spending tons on your food, take a trip down to one of the 3 "Mania" restaurants, they are buffet restaurants and great value for money! Make sure you get a high floor, the higher, the better!
Hope this review helped.
