Good food is not enough. A restaurant’s attitude to its diners is also important.
I’d ordered Escalope Milanese (£11.95). It came with a minute portion of spaghetti in tomato sauce. When it was eaten with half the escalope still to go I politely asked for some more pasta. I was told pasta was an accompaniment not meant to replace potatoes and vegetables.
"But I didn’t get any potatoes and vegetables" I said, even though the menu said the dishes came with them. The owner drew in her breath. "But not if you have pasta" she replied. "It clearly states so in the menu."
She flounced off returning with the menu which she opened and thrust at me. I read the sentence in large letters that said the meal price included potatoes and vegetables, except for dishes accompanied with rice. She then read it and replied with Fawlty logic that rice also ‘meant’ pasta. After this totally unnecessary interlude a bowl of spaghetti was placed on the table. Why do they do this over a serving of pasta costing no more than 5p to them?
I also was not happy at the way all the menu prices were considerably higher than the menu in the display case outside the restaurant, and the hand written label on menus inside stating that all steak and poultry dishes would have a 50p surcharge because of the ‘Foot and Mouth’ outbreak.
The restaurant was very busy and the food was great. And if I hadn’t had that dish I’d probably written a rave review. But I’m not sure I’ll return.
A happy customer MAY be a good customer, but an unhappy customer WILL NO LONGER present their custom again. Serves the cheeky bastards right. As for the 50p surcharge... they should have wavered as a gesture of gratitude for using the restaurant (especially as they probably used inferior, cheaper foreign meat)! A restaurant is far more than what is in the menu. Superb opinion and view. Tom.
