The tram has been in existence since 1888 when it was officially opened by the Governor and in these days the wooden tram was powered by coal fired boilers. It was not till 1926 that it was changed to electricity and the enlarged carriage could carry 52 people. After the second World War the all metal tram was introduced and increased in size to carry 62 passengers, then 11 years later a fully enclosed carriage was introduced made of aluminium and able to carry 72 people. However in 1989 it was modernised introducing new technology and new trams that could carry 120 passengers.

Our trip after spending time on the peak ,where we had arrived by bus was just the downward journey. On entering everyone scrambles for a seat on the left hand side to get the views most of the way down unfortunately we were not quick enough even though we had been first in the queue. Inside the seat could only be described as hard ,very hard slatted and you sit facing up hill. I didn't understand why till be moved then you are forced into the back of the seat by the gradient an equally uncomfortable experience. I soon realised if we faced downhill we would be thrown out of our seats. No standing is allowed but that does not stop everyone trying to stand to get one last picture and nearly fall over. The views are amazing and well worth a bit of discomfort. As we were on an excursion I am sorry I do not know the price of a ticket but I am sure like most things in Hong Kong it would be cheap.
The Victoria Peak is the highest point on the Hong Kong island. From above the peak, you can get the best view of the beautiful city and the harbour. There are various way to go to the Peak but the best I believe is to go on the Peak Tram. It is the oldest mode of public transport and it's been in operation since 1888. It is a railway that carves a steep 373-metre ride up the hill. For those who are afriad of height, the ride up the top can be quite ... ...on it twice: one during the day and one at night and you will see the big contrast in the view between the day and night. It operated between Admiralty and the Victoria Peak (or more commonly, the Peak) on Hong Kong Island. Advantages: magnificent views Disadvantages: along way up and can be difficult for families with small children on the tram
I have been on the peak tram several times and it makes my heart skip a beat every time.
It is a steep climb and lasts for 7-8 minutes. The best place to sit on the way up is on the right hand side where you experience spectacular views . Once at the top there are several attractions and shops to while away your time. As well as again the spectacular view there is a coffee shop which i recommend gazing across Hong Kong which also gives a view of ...

Hong Kong - A Taste of the Orient - another of my favourite cities.
Hong Kong is a city that never sleeps, the New York of the east with a dose of the orient chucked in for good measure. Its gritty reality means Hong Kong is the real deal, far removed from the sanitised versions of the Far East found in cities like Singapore. Gateway to China and a consumer and cultural haven packed into small area, Hong Kong has something for everyone.
Ideal for a holiday or shorter stopover it is an intoxicating place and while it may be quite westernised Chinese traditions dominate.
The grandeur of the high rises of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are impressive and where better to see them than from Victoria Peak, catch the PeakTram for spectacular views of the city, so steep is the ride that the floor of the tram is angled to allow ...

Advantages: Best Views In Hong Kong Disadvantages: Queues For The Tram
Description
----------------
Above Hong Kong Island, on the 'back of the Dragon', Victoria Peak is one HongKong's top visitor attractions. Ut provides magnificent harbour and city views, either by day or by night.
The PeakTram
---------------------
This is the only true way to travel up to the peak. This is a funicular railway that carves a steep swathe up the mountainside. The tram has been in operation since 1888, try to get seats on the right-hand side for the journey upward, the only way to describe the views from here is "awesome".
What's There
-------------------
The Peak offers an assortment of dining and shopping delights, a new viewing terrace and a Madame Tussauds waxworks. But be warned, this is a tourist trap so don't expect any bargains or even anything reasonably priced.
The Peak Walk ...
Advantages: Something for everyone, Disadvantages: Humid in the summer
and the city is built around this beautiful forest. Suprisingly, Hong Kong is over 70% greenery!
The most popular attraction in Hong Kong is the Victoria Peak, which was a residential area in the Colonial times. You can catch a tram from Central which goes up a steep mountain through Mid-Levels. The Peak is host to a variety of popular restaurants and has a view that is absolutely breathtaking. From the Peak, you can see the whole of Hong Kong island, the harbour and most of Kowloon.
Hong Kong is great value for money with its huge variety of cheap but great quality hotels. The food is cheap (Noodles and a drink cost me £1) and the people are incredibly friendly.
Transport is incredible. Then again, after the tube, anywhere would be better! There are plenty of buses, which run incredibly frequently for very cheap (30p per bus ride!). The trams ...
