When on our trip to Hong Kong one of the thing on our to do list was a trip to Victoria peak to take in the marvellous view and ride on the famous peak tram.

The History

The tram has been in existence since 1888 when it was officially opened by the Governor and in these days the wooden tram was powered by coal fired boilers. It was not till 1926 that it was changed to electricity and the enlarged carriage could carry 52 people. After the second World War the all metal tram was introduced and increased in size to carry 62 passengers, then 11 years later a fully enclosed carriage was introduced made of aluminium and able to carry 72 people. However in 1989 it was modernised introducing new technology and new trams that could carry 120 passengers.

Today

The peak tram is a double reversible funicular railway which these days is fully computer controlled and I am pleased to report has100% backup to ensure the tram will stop on the steepest part of the track even when fully loaded.

The trams run up and down the 1.4 km long track every 10 to 15 minutes and rise to 396m above sea level. It is open daily from 7am right up till midnight for visitors to enjoy the night views of the light show.

Our trip after spending time on the peak ,where we had arrived by bus was just the downward journey. On entering everyone scrambles for a seat on the left hand side to get the views most of the way down unfortunately we were not quick enough even though we had been first in the queue. Inside the seat could only be described as hard ,very hard slatted and you sit facing up hill. I didn't understand why till be moved then you are forced into the back of the seat by the gradient an equally uncomfortable experience. I soon realised if we faced downhill we would be thrown out of our seats. No standing is allowed but that does not stop everyone trying to stand to get one last picture and nearly fall over.
The views are amazing and well worth a bit of discomfort. As we were on an excursion I am sorry I do not know the price of a ticket but I am sure like most things in Hong Kong it would be cheap.

I highly recommend a ride on the Tram.

The tram is brilliant - we went up and down, a great experience and I endorse your recommendation. It was good value too. Good review, Caroline xx

Very interesting. A pity you dont have any photos but then, perhaps i'd be looking at them holding on for grim death (i'm not too keen on heights) or else other peoples heads. Very helpful though.
