My Lovely Little Pear Tree!

Advantages: Easy to grow, lovely fruit
Disadvantages: Lots of pests

Along with the Apple, Orange and Banana, the Pear is one of the most familiar British fruits. Oranges and Bananas do not grow naturally in the UK so I have always considered Pears to be the second British fruit, after the Apple. When I was growing up my Auntie always had an Orchard that was full of Apple trees and Pear trees, and even the odd Gooseberry bush. I was always very envious of my Cousins and longed for an Orchard of my own, but as my Parents explained an Orchard in our Garden was not practical. And so my dream of having my very own Orchard stayed with me into my Adult life. About 3 years ago I decided that I would plant a variety of different tree seeds with the intention of transferring them to my Garden when they were large enough. These seeds included native British trees like Oak, Beech and Sycamore as well as Apple ...

Holiday Inn, Pear Tree, Oxford

Advantages: Luxury Facilities, modern and clean
Disadvantages: Bit pricey if booking last minute

around Oxford as I think this is really useful when planning a stay. The bathroom had a bath and power shower over, which was really powerful!! It also had the little things which you sometimes forget, such as shampoo, conditioner, shower hat, shoe shine and sewing kit. I have stayed in both the standard rooms and executive, the executive really are only different because they have a black out screen (didn't find that essential for my stay), they have a mini bar (very expensive) and the use of a robe if using the leisure facilities. For the extra cost I didn't think it was worth it personally. The leisure facilities were in my opinion really exceptional, and a plus for the hotel. They were very clean and had a relaxing atmosphere. The indoor pool was warm and seemed really large for a hotel, and the jacuzzi by the side was ...

Review of Holiday Inn, Oxford

Pyrus communis var. sativa (Pear)

Advantages: Super-delicious fruit, stores well, many uses
Disadvantages: Takes a lot of looking after :-)

After Apples, Pears are my second favourite fruit, so what best to write my next review on, but pears! Pears need more consistently warm conditions than apples to crop reliably. Late-ripening cultivars require dry and warm conditions throughout late summer and early autumn. They have a winter chilling requirement of 600 - 900 hours below 7 degrees celsius (45 degrees fahrenheit). Pears may be trained in a similar way to apples; bush, dwarf pyramid, cordon, and espalier forms are the most suitable for small gardens. They are usually grown on quince, rather than pear, rootstocks as this produces smaller trees. Some new rootstocks are under trial. ------------------------------------------------ SITE AND PLANTING ------------------------------------------------ Pears flower earlier than apples, in mid- to late spring, and may be ...
