"How not to decorate" Romanian style

Advantages: Attractive and interesting attraction, good value for money, don't have to pay to see grounds
Disadvantages: Decor quite tasteless in parts

The castles of Peles and Pelisor are right next to each other, for reasons I'll explain later, but it's a visit to the bigger, grander Peles Castle I'm reviewing here. The castle was originally built as a summer residence for King Carol I who was actually German; the guide who took us round the castle explained a little of how it came about that this German became king of Romania, a rather complicated history which is too intricate to explain ...
...Something that is great about Peles is that you need not pay an admission fee unless you actually want to see the interior but you can go into the grounds and get a good look at the exterior of the castle and the murals in the courtyard as well as the superb Romanelli sculptures in the gardens. The somewhat smaller and more tasteful Pelisor Castle stands in the same grounds and as you come in through the gate (look out for the bedraggled looking ... more

Sinaia-where good and bad meet

Advantages: It's cheaper than Aspen
Disadvantages: Not such good value for money

I will start by telling you that I am Romanian and very proud of my country even though I have been living in the UK for some time now. About 2 Novembers ago my partner and I decided to visit Sinaia. It was not my first trip there but it was for my partner who decided that no matter what he wanted to go to Sinaia. Maybe it was the Peles Castle that made him decide against other destinations in Romania but that proved to be a big mistake! We boarded a BA flight from Heathrow and paid £267.50 each/return.The price was huge considering you can fly to NY for less than that but Romania is not yet as known as NYC :-)) We booked our flights with OPODO with I found to be good value for money for Romania if you book early! The flight was direct and left London at 9.30 am.We arrived in Bucharest-capital of Romania- at around 4pm local time. It ...

Review of Sinaia

Sinaia - a piste of history

Advantages: Cheap skiing, beautiful palaces
Disadvantages: Nightlife mostly for the young, poor food

looking half-timbered affair up the hill near the royal palaces. This is the bargain accommodation of Sinaia and is perfectly situated for people wishing to visit the palaces. However, it is a steep and fairly long hike out of town and Sinaia taxi drivers are canny operators. The historic sights of Sinaia can be covered in a day if you are short of time, two days would also allow for some exploration of the town itself and perhaps a walk into the country and a cable car ride. Sinaia is known throughout Romania as the summer home of the Royal family. King Carol I had Peles Castle built here in the mid nineteenth century using the latest building techniques and incorporating some of the latest technology. The Castle's design is similar to those in southern Germany - all turrets and Gothic towers - and this was the request of Carol who was ...
