I've recently come back from a 20 month trip around South East Asia. Also worked in Thailand, learned the language and really got to know the people.

Known as the "Pearl of the Orient" Penang is an island that not too many people have heard of. At times it was so, so quiet. One night I was in a large fancy restaurant with only me and one other family, which was creepy after travelling from Thailand.
A beautiful Island that is almost on a par with Phuket, with loads of places to go and great places to shop. I found the people to be amongst the nicest I've known. One day was trying to find the Thai consulate so I could renew my Visa and drove around George Town for about an hour and got nowhere fast. As a last chance option because they where about to close I ended up asking a very old man on a motorbike. No problem - follow me he replied. Took me straight there and I got my VISA.
At the north of the island (Batu Ferringhi) you will find the best beaches. Although the sea was oily in places and was not as nice as Phuket (Thailand) I would still recommend a visit. Also be aware of Jellyfish. I experienced pain that I’ve never felt before. Ask the locals at Ali’s Guest House for more info. The weather is so hot that even the people that live on the island get sun burnt, so be careful.
Favourite Bar in Batu Ferringhi was the Reggae Club. Here you will see a guy called Max. He knows and does everything that’s worth doing on the Island. He did not try to sell me anything and just recommended places to go. Just provided great music and cool beer.
Had a great time hanging out with some strange and wonderful people. Sometimes it felt like I was in a strange David Lynch style movie.
The only thing that was expensive was the Taxis. Which were about at the same rate as the UK. If you need to hire a motorbike or car you will need to show your driving licence. So don't forget to take it!

Nice one Scott. It's good to see that youngsters such as yourself enjoy Penang as much as I do. I was surprised you found the taxis expensive though.
Pete.
