Penang, known as the Pearl of Orient is one of the nice place to visit in Malaysia. The capital of Penang State, George Town city is now listed as UNESCO World Heritage City status. This status confirm that the value of Penang historical buildings and its story behind.
There is a lot of nice places you can visit in Penang. First of all, you might want to visit to the highest point of Penang island, the Penang Hill. There are two alternatives that you can choose to get up to Penang Hill, one is by the Penang Hill railway from Air Itam, another one is using the hiking path near to Botanical Garden.
Another nice visiting spot in Penang is the Kek Lok Si Temple. Kek Lok Si Temple is building that combines Chinese, Thai and Burmese design. There is a pond full with turtle there. Many tourists like to feed the turtle in the ponds, some throw some coins there to make wishes, although this is not encouraged.
Others great visiting places like Batu Feringghi night market, Snake Temple, Sleeping Buddha, Penang Youth Park and Botanical City are also full of tourist at most of the time. Besides that, you will like to visit the highest building in Penang, the Tun Abdul Razak Complex, or more commonly known as KOMTAR building.
Penang delicious hawker food was attracting most of the tourist to come back Penang again. While visiting to Penang, you must try out Penang Laksa, a bowl of noodle that serve with mackerel soup and assam, which provide the sour taste to the soup. Others hawker food like fried kueh teow, hokkien mee and fried oyster were also famous food in Penang. The tasty hawker food just cost you around MYR3 – MYR10 for each portion.
If you visiting Penang during the local fruit season in May-July of each year, you can try visiting Balik Pulau Fruit farm. You can enjoy delicious and fresh local fruits there. The most famous fruit here is the durian, the king of fruit in Malaysia. You can find out rambutan and mangoesteen here too.
One of the disadvantages in Penang was the terrible traffic. The public transport here doesn’t come on time and this caused a lot of time wasted. Furthermore, the hot weather here makes you dislike waiting for the bus under the sun.
