Penghu Islands was my first experience of what you would call tropical lifestyle and I loved it!
Penghu Islands is relatively untouched by the western world. It does have a McDonalds though, which was handy for me because, to be honest, I'm not really a fan of anything but western food. I spent a weekend in Penghu Islands and my entire time there I didn't see a single foreigner. It's completely different to the hustle and bustle of Taipei. So as for food there is lots on offer, I'm not too sure of the names of the food but if you are sea food and a Chinese fan then you will love it here with all the little food shops on every street you go all for a cheap price with genuine taste that you don't find here in England.
As for nightlife...It doesn't have much to offer if you're into drinking and clubbing. Taipei offers that, but then at the same time that's western things pubs and nightclubs. I can't say for the rest of Asia, but in Taiwan they don't go out to drink like us English. But if you are into a drink with a meal then you will find this. Especially try the local aboriginal wine as well. It's lush!
Penghu has it all to offer. White sandy beaches, clear blue water, and lush tropical fish for diving, breath taking views of other islands from the one you are standing on. Hopping islands on boats and enjoying the right outside the boat, catching the sun. Also Penghu offers side of all the temples and they are some amazing temples on this group of islands. Lovely stuff!
The people there are very friendly, especially towards foreigners. I was invited to drink with some locals outside our hotel. They wouldn't let me pay for anything, which was handy because I drank quite a few of their beers. They also offered me food as well and their customs as well. Which is quite difficult to go into. But this is the kind of friendliness you will encounter here. Being offered food in night markets.
As far accommodation, we stayed in a cheap hotel which did the job. Pretty basic with double bed as standard, cable TV, air con and bathroom and all that. I think it cost around 20 pound a night. Also the one with stayed with can arrange to take you around the island and will sort out boats and things like water sports activities for you. So the hotel arranged our transport. I imagine all the hotels provide this kind of things. As far transport you can rent out a scooter and you can take a taxi all of which is pretty cheap. In total we spent about 100 pounds which included the 40 pound return flight to there from Taipei
I wouldn’t say I would recommend Penghu as holiday but I would say you should definitely check it out if you are to go to Taiwan.
